IRC is looking for an intern to help scale up engagement with young professionals on our WASH Systems Academy. Deadline: 13 June 2025

The WASH Systems Academy is one of IRC’s flagship products. It is a collaborative online platform developed and hosted by IRC to provide WASH sector professionals with the knowledge and tools to strengthen WASH systems. The Academy was launched in September 2019 and now has over 11.000 users from 126 countries with 18 courses offered for free and more courses in development. 95% of our users recommend us and say that they find opportunities to improve their work after following one of our courses. Intern: Global Programme, WASH Systems Academy/ Young professionals’ partnership and engagement

Most WASH Systems Academy users are young professionals with less than five years work experience (52%), followed by 6 to 10 years (24%) and 11 years plus (24%). 

To inform further development of our learning platform, we seek to scale up partnerships with young professionals and deepen engagement with young activists and change makers. 

The intern will support IRC in identifying ways to scale up engagement and partnerships with young professionals, young activists and change makers. This will be done by analysing user data, interviewing selected users and conducting market research. The intern will also explore possible enhancements to our products and services. 

When possible, the intern will implement changes to the platform, communication and marketing of the WASH Systems Academy. The intern will also organise a hybrid training for young professionals, young activists and change makers and possibly set up a youth panel. 

Main responsibilities

  • Complete and refresh our ‘WASH systems strengthening: The basics’ course. Drafting and proposing new content. Create a new session activity on the role of youth.
  • Conduct interviews, literature study, documentation and research, market study related to young professionals, young activists and change makers.
  • Prepare information on ways to scale up engagement and partnerships for youth.
  • Organise hybrid training for young professionals, young activists and change makers and possibly set up a youth panel.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in or have recently graduated from a recognised (under)graduate programme. Preferably in a field related to international development, training, capacity development, communication or marketing.
  • Applicant should be well-organised, self-motivated, and reliable, with a strong interest in development cooperation and international relations, and the water, sanitation, and hygiene sector.
  • Applicant should have an affinity with information and knowledge management and have an eye for detail, accuracy, and relevance.
  • Writing skills and excellent computer skills, including using Excel, are required. 
  • Good knowledge of English is required.
  • Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated volunteering or other experience related to development cooperation.

Details of the position

  • Start date from June 2025.
  • The candidate will initially be offered a 3-month internship, with the possibility to extend to 6 months if the assignment requires this, for 24 – 40 hours per week. The internship will be assessed after the first month to determine if it is a good mutual fit for the intern and IRC.
  • The intern may work remotely (online) or from the office in The Hague.
  • Stipend for the internship is € 425, – (gross) per month based on a 40-hour working week.
