The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray–Darling Basin’s water resources in the national interest. With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise-based statutory agency.
The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia’s economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 50 First Nations. How we manage the Basin as a whole connected system, manage our water carefully, and protect it for future generations is set out in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
The Position
The River Modernisation Project Officer role will work with an interdisciplinary team to drive the continuous improvement of the operation of the River Murray system. The role primarily supports a range committees and working groups, and other activities including policy development, data and option analysis, incident management and planning, and stakeholder engagement. The role will work closely with the River Murray Operations and Environmental water delivery functions and state and commonwealth water management agencies. This is a good opportunity for the right candidate to engage and learn from senior Joint Government officials and develop policy and insight into decision making as to how the River Murray system is governed and run.
Your key responsibilities in this role are to:
- Provide administrative, project and secretariat support for the Capacity Policy Working Group which is made up of MDBA and state water management and Government representatives.
- Provide administrative, project and secretariat support for the Water Delivery Optimisation Program Board, the Trade Working Group and the Menindee Review Steering Committee.
- Provide administrative and project support to the review of the Basin Plan regarding its potential impacts on and interaction with the operation of the River Murray System, particularly the provision of Critical Human Water Needs.
- Provide administrative and project support for implementation and improvement of River Murray system water trade policy.
- Provide administrative and project support for the investigation and assessment options for reinstating water delivery capacity in the River Murray system and the Review of the operation of Menindee Lakes.
- Review and synthesize technical information into clear communication material including email summaries and briefing papers to support senior staff and decision makers.
- Contribute to broader tasks for the team as required, including preparing briefing papers and other operational documents.
- Support and contribute to the management of governance, project and procurement processes.
