By joining the Division of Water, Field Operation Branch, Hazard Regional Office as an Environmental Scientist III in Perry County, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the protecting of the waters of Kentucky in a fast paced, exciting and collaborative environment. The Department for Environmental Protection, Division of Water’s mission is to manage, protect and enhance the quality and quantity of the Commonwealth’s water resources for present and future generations through voluntary, regulatory and educational programs.
Holders of the Environmental Scientist III position will complete tasks such as:
- Provides assistance and technical oversite in the inspection of Clean Water Act (CWA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), and Water Resource facilities to determine compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
- Develops and evaluates guidelines and procedures.
- Prepares written documentation, including photographs and analytical results of facility inspections and/or investigation activities conducted due to complaints of violations made by the general public.
- Utilizes sampling instruments for environmental field data collection including calibrating and maintaining these instruments.
- Evaluates and documents regulatory notifications in accordance with the established procedures.
- Participates in special projects and assignments.
- Represents the Division and participates in enforcement activities including case preparation, participation in enforcement conferences and providing testimony as a witness.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
- Knowledge in Drinking Water Regulations and Compliance with those regulations
- Knowledge on emerging contaminants in Drinking Water identified by the EPA.
- Experience in writing reports
- Experience in conducting field work (i.e. inspections, sampling, investigations, etc)

This position is required to maintain a valid driver’s license. Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide, and occasional out-of-state, basis. An incumbent in this position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snake and insect bites, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, and rusty metal in streams.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION:Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:Three years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in the position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which require the following of safety procedures.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
