The Technical University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) is one of the largest practice-oriented universities in Bavaria, covering a broad range of subjects including engineering, social sciences, economics, design, and languages. Job Description:

Water, environment, and infrastructure are essential pillars of climate protection and adaptation. Sustainable and interdisciplinary concepts in civil engineering, architecture, and urban planning represent an important teaching and research focus at our faculty, which is highly valued by both students and our industrial partners.

As the future holder of the position,

you will be responsible for further developing and representing the subject area of ​​hydraulic engineering and urban water management within the Department of Civil Engineering, based on the fundamentals of water engineering (hydromechanics, structural hydraulic engineering, urban water management, and numerical methods). You have practical experience and specialist qualifications, in particular in-depth knowledge of hydromechanics, urban water management, and structural hydraulic engineering. To provide further impetus for the expansion of the subject area and the range of courses offered at the university, participation in relevant civil engineering bodies and committees is welcome. Strengthening our activities in application-oriented research is part of your responsibilities. Ideally, you are committed to further expanding our already established contacts with industrial partners in water engineering and water management.

The Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering offers excellent conditions for conducting research projects. Through close integration with the “Sustainable and Intelligent Systems” doctoral program and a project-based master’s program in research, you will find established cross-university structures to attract qualified academic staff to implement your innovative research ideas.

Our university is developing into a bilingual institution. Therefore, we expect you to offer courses in both German and English. Excellent English skills are a prerequisite.

The professorship also requires:

  • if necessary, taking over courses from the basic area, the further study programme and related areas, also in other faculties;
  • Willingness to undertake regular guest stays at international universities with a strategic connection to the THWS;
  • active participation in the further development of the faculty and the university;
  • Commitment to the internationalization and self-administration of our university and participation in applied research projects and in the field of technology and knowledge transfer.

The position is to be filled on 01.10.2026  ; the place of work is in Würzburg.

Recruitment requirements:

To take up the professorship at our university, the following requirements must be met (Art. 57 para. 3 Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act):

  • Completed university degree, preferably in a course relevant to the subject area;
  • pedagogical aptitude, which is usually demonstrated by experience in teaching and training;
  • special ability to carry out scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate;
  • exceptional achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods in at least five years of professional experience, which must be acquired after completing the university studies and of which at least three years must have been carried out outside the university sector; periods as a trainee or as a scientific or artistic employee can only be credited for up to two years in total; proof of professional experience outside the university sector can, in special cases, be provided by providing that a significant part of the professional activity was carried out in cooperation between the university and non-university professional practice over a period of at least five years.

The professorship is to be filled on a full-time basis.
