Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual, who will contribute to the effective management, regulation and development of navigation activities on and around the Anglian Waterways, covering Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, and parts of West Norfolk.

As a River Inspector, you will provide a frontline presence undertaking enforcement activities to ensure those using our waterways adhere to our legislation and regulations. You will lead on ‘field’ based targeted enforcement patrols, conducting boat registration compliance checks, serving enforcement notices and supporting the wider enforcement team to increase compliance and registration income.

You must be able to build good working relationships with colleagues and professional partners, including emergency services, and other key stakeholders.

You will work both in the field and in the office and will require good IT skills.

The Team:

The Waterways Partnerships & Development team manage partnership working, vessel registration, enforcement activities, income and funding strategies and waterways estates. 

The wider team cover 568km’s of navigable waterways, with over 6,000 boats, across Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, West Norfolk, Essex and Suffolk, known as the Anglian Waterways.

The Environment Agency is working towards achieving a ‘sustainable navigation business’, ensuring ‘more people and wildlife benefit from improved waterways’ as described in our corporate plan.

Experience/skills required

Through experience to date you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Exceptional organisational skills, display good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good attention to detail when recording information to support enforcement activities.
  • You must be able to prioritise a varied workload, integrating into a small team and working closely with colleagues from other teams and external organisations.
  • You must demonstrate strong health, safety and wellbeing principles for yourself and others.
  • Experience of working closely in a team.
  • You must have a good understanding of working in a customer-focused environment.
  • You must hold a valid driving licence.

Desired

  • Boat handling/skipper qualifications.

Role specific license requirements: Full UK Driving Licence is essential
