Job description
Water is essential for drinking, washing, recreation, industry and health. Our environment and economy depends on this precious resource.
The pressure on water resources from climate change and population growth means that managing water abstractions has never been more important.
We’re looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual with good communication, planning and data handling skills to support our role in managing Water Resources in Yorkshire.
Supported by our Water Resource Specialists, you will help to protect and improve the quantity of water available for wildlife, people and future generations. You will do this by supporting workloads such as:
- responding to requests for data and information
- supporting the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP)
- managing the Abstraction Licence Strategy process
- notifying abstractors when abstraction restrictions are in place (Hands off flow process)
- providing technical administrative support to other team members
- drought incident support
- review of abstraction licence returns data to support compliance/enforcement work

The team
The Integrated Environment Planning (IEP) team is predominantly a water planning team with specialists in water quality, water resources and river basin planning.
Working with area operational teams, national policy makers and other stakeholders, in particular water companies, we produce the environmental plans that drive Yorkshire area priorities.
Our diverse and friendly team of advisors are at the heart of environmental decision making, facilitating integrated actions to solve complex problems.
Experience/skills required
Knowledge of water resources would be a distinct advantage but not essential for the right candidate.
Experience of using GIS or other software/systems to bring complex data and evidence to life.
Experience of gathering, maintaining, quality-assuring, and analysing data/information preferably through use of excel, Power Bi
Good communication/influencing skills – You should be able to produce clear/persuasive written material and brief more senior staff and customers face-to-face.
Good organisational skills/discipline and the ability to plan, track, deliver and evaluate work.
Able to work under own initiative and as part of a larger, cross-functional/multidisciplinary team.
Able to support working groups and organise/facilitate effective meetings.
Sensitive to the needs of the internal and external customers and able to deliver outcomes through these.
Ability to convey information to technical and non-technical audiences alike.
