Dr. Asmita Murumkar in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University (OSU) is seeking applications for a Researcher 1 position. The successful candidate will contribute to an active, interdisciplinary research project focused on evaluating the impact of best management practices (BMPs) on water quality in Ohio watersheds. The project utilizes remote sensing technologies and watershed modeling to analyze land management strategies and their environmental outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Analyze and synthesize data from remote sensing and other emerging sources relevant to agricultural landscapes.
• Develop and apply GIS-based maps to support spatial analysis of watershed characteristics and land-use practices.
• Assist in the development, calibration, and application of watershed models to simulate water quality impacts.
• Collaborate across disciplines and contribute to project reports, publications, and presentations.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Asmita Murumkar (murumkar.1@osu.edu), Assistant Professor in Extension and FABE. The position also offers opportunities to work collaboratively with other faculty and staff within CFAES. Ample opportunities exist for professional development and skills development through various academic and non-academic training/educational programs.
The position will be located on the Columbus campus.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s required; master’s degree preferred in Agricultural, Civil, or Environmental Engineering, Agricultural or Environmental Sciences, or other related field. Minimum years of relevant research experience required: 1-3 years.
• Have successfully completed coursework in the areas of remote sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), watershed hydrology, watershed planning and management, environmental studies, statistics, or applied machine learning.
• Proven experience writing peer-reviewed manuscripts, or grant-writing proposal or fellowships.
Required Skills:
• Ability to manage and organize data and to use programming languages such as R, MATLAB, or Python for data processing and analysis.
• Ability to use geospatial techniques like ArcGIS or other GIS software for generating maps.
• Demonstrated experience working with remote sensing data, GIS tools, and watershed modeling techniques.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with interdisciplinary teams.
• Conduct research for funded projects as well as propose, initiate, and lead new research projects within the scope of the program.
• Ability to present the research findings at local, regional, and international meetings and conferences.
• Highly motivated individual who enjoys the challenges of research. Excellent organizational skills and detail oriented.
