Institut de recherche en mines et en environnement (IRME) Groupe de Recherche sur l’Eau Souterraine (GRES) Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) |
PhD and MSc Openings at Groundwater Research Group at UQAT
Position Description:
Graduate research positions (one PhD and one MSc) are available in Groundwater Resaerch Group (GRES) at the Institut de recherche en mines et en environnement (IRME), Université du Québec en Abitibi- Témiscamingue (UQAT). These positions are part of an NSERC-funded research program focused on assessing wildfire impacts on water resources in boreal watersheds of Quebec’s Canadian Shield. The project integrates hydrological modeling, remote sensing, machine learning, and geochemical analysis to understand how wildfires influence water quantity and quality.
Successful candidates will contribute to interdisciplinary projects involving:
- Remote sensing and machine learning for post-wildfire flood modeling
- Groundwater recharge modeling under wildfire-altered conditions
- Field sampling and advanced hydrogeochemical modeling of nutrients and contaminants using hybrid deep learning-numerical models
Start Dates:
Flexible start dates are available (Fall 2025, Winter 2026, or Summer 2026), subject to admission deadlines at UQAT.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Hydrogeology, Environmental Engineering, Civil or Water Resources Engineering, or a related field
- Meet the admission requirements of UQAT Graduate Studies
- Demonstrated motivation, independence, and interest in interdisciplinary environmental research Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB)
- Experience with remote sensing, GIS, or geospatial modeling
- Familiarity with hydrological or geochemical modeling tools (e.g., PHREEQC, MODFLOW)
- Background in wildfire, watershed hydrology, remote sensing, or water quality
- Prior research experience or publications
How to Apply:
Interested candidates should email Dr. Rahim Barzegar at rahim.barzegar@uqat.ca with the subject line “Graduate Application – Wildfire and Water Project”. Please include a statement of interest (maximum one page), a Curriculum Vitae (CV), and copies of academic transcripts.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.
