Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Research Assistant specializing in water quality data collection and biochar production using plants cultivated on floating platforms. This dynamic role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities aimed at advancing our research in climate change, carbon sequestration, and agricultural water management.
This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renew of grant of restricted funding.
Responsibilities:
- Lead EPA-funded research projects and collaborate with the principal investigator on experimental and modeling research, focusing on nutrient removal, carbon sequestration, and biochar production.
- Assist in the development and implementation of nutrient best management practices to promote sustainable natural resource utilization
- Provide leadership and actively participate in in-situ water quality and nutrient data collection and analysis for modeling, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of environmental dynamics.
- Assist in writing research reports, manuscripts, and grant proposals, and present research findings at scientific meetings, promoting the dissemination of knowledge and insights. Additionally, engage in extension and outreach activities as needed, collaboration with colleagues in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (CAFNR), and support externally funded project management, offering guidance to undergraduate and graduate students, research technicians, and the principal investigator and co-investigator as required.
- Participates and assists in college-wide events, activities, committees and performs other duties as deemed necessary.
Required Education & Experience:
- Ph.D. in plant physiology, agronomy, biotechnology, agricultural science, or any other relevant academic field emphasizing soil-water-plant relationship.
- No prior experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Proficient in water quality analysis, soil health analysis, plant health analysis and crop modeling.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey research findings, write research reports and manuscripts, and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong quantitative and programming skills, with expertise in languages such as R, Python, C, C++, or comparable languages. Proficiency in these languages will be essential for data analysis, modeling, and software development.
- Strong numerical modeling skills, including the ability to develop, implement, and interpret models. Strong analytical and statistical skills to analyze data and draw meaningful conclusions.
- A keen interest in the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams. This includes collaborating with researchers, scientists, and experts from all backgrounds to achieve common research goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in plant physiology, agronomy, biotechnology, agricultural science, or any other relevant academic field emphasizing soil-water-plant relationship.
- 0-3 years of related work experience
- Considerable experience in carbon dynamics, climate change, phenotyping, plant-microbe interaction, plant physiology, laboratory analytical techniques, field research design, and project implementations at different scales (field and watershed).
- Interested in climate change and water quality modeling.
- Strong record of peer-reviewed publications and experience preparing grant proposals.
- Able to work with and train undergraduate and graduate students.
