The Director of Freshwater and Forest Conservation will lead the Conservation Council of New Brunswick’s (CCNB) efforts to protect biodiversity and enhance the health of New Brunswick’s freshwater and forest ecosystems.

Reporting to the Executive Director, this role involves developing and executing science-based advocacy, policy reform initiatives, and community engagement to halt and reverse habitat loss in forest and freshwater systems.

The successful candidate will oversee projects related to forest conservation, water quality, wetland protection, and biodiversity strategy implementation. This role includes engaging with Indigenous knowledge holders, government, and the public to promote sustainable practices. The Director of Freshwater and Forest Conservation will supervise and support any program staff, contractors. volunteers, or interns. The Director will also lead fundraising efforts, including writing grant applications and supporting donor relations for conservation initiatives

This position is a fixed-term contract for two years, with the potential for extension based on organizational needs, performance, and available funding. We only accept applications from candidates who can legally work in Canada at the time of application.

Duties include:

Policy and Practice Advocacy

  • Lead the organization’s biodiversity-focused advocacy efforts, including participation inthe provincial biodiversity strategy development.
  • Advocate for policies to reach 30% land and water protection by 2030 and for full implementation of the NB Species at Risk Act.
  • Promote sustainable forest practices, including protection of old-growth forests, community forest models, and a ban on glyphosate spraying.
  • Participate in the Clean Water Act review process and other consultations related to water strategy and wetland protection.
  • Produce and publish reports and policy recommendations related to river health, forest management, and wetland conservation.
  • Engage in and influence government planning processes.
  • Provide evidence-based policy recommendations and draft responses to government consultations and reports.

Public and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent CCNB in stakeholder processes, workshops, and policy forums related to forest and water management.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities to support the integration of knowledge and co-management.
  • Collaborate with other NGOs, scientists, and community organizations to build collective advocacy strategies.
  • Work with CCNB’s Education and Engagement team and CCNB’s Communication team to develop outreach events, briefings, and public campaigns to raise awareness of biodiversity and habitat issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support staff, contractors. volunteers, or interns.
  • Oversee project timelines, deliverables, and budgets to ensure efficient and impactful program implementation.
  • Provide mentorship, professional development, and performance reviews for program team members

Professional Development

  • Stay current on emerging trends in forest and water conservation, Indigenous-led conservation, and biodiversity policy.
  • Identify and pursue relevant conferences, workshops, and training opportunities.
  • Develop and implement individual and team learning plans to foster continuous growth.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Report on freshwater and forest program outcomes to the Executive Director, funders, and the Board of Directors.
  • Lead fundraising efforts, including writing grant applications and supporting donor relations for conservation initiatives.
  • Participate in organizational strategic planning and cross-program collaborations.
  • Support organization-wide events and contribute to public communications and annual reporting.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in environmental science, biology, forestry, water management, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in environmental policy, advocacy, or conservation project management.
  • Demonstrated experience with government engagement, public policy analysis, and Indigenous collaboration.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and public speaking skills.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within New Brunswick

Flexible language requirement

  • Preference is given to bilingual candidates (English & French)
  • Knowledge of a Wabanaki language is an asset

  • Must be willing to have (and must pass) a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sectors Check.

Working Conditions

  • Position is based at the Conservation Council’s office in Fredericton.
  • Hybrid working environment possible.
  • Travel is required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Pay: $60,000 per year
  • Expected hours: 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday
  • Expected start date: May 19th, 2025
