Job description
We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment. We help people & wildlife adapt to climate change and reduce its impacts.
We have an exciting opportunity for an individual to join our Hydrometry & Telemetry team, making a difference by protecting people and the environment through hydrometry.
Hydrometric data is used by the EA to issue flood warnings, make incident management decisions, and manage water abstractions. We are responsible for maintaining a long-term hydrometric archive to inform water resource planning, flood risk management and climate change planning and investment.
This role will support the Natural Capital and Ecosystems Assessment (NCEA) project that aims to develop a network of sites, producing high quality data, that can measure changes in the water environment, including the impacts of climate change.
Delivery of the NCEA water quantity project will be based around assessing the performance of flow monitoring stations.
This will include:
- Quality assurance and management of hydrometric data
- Investigating, identifying, and delivering opportunities to improve site performance
- Collecting on site measurements to check station performance
The successful candidate will work with others to improve data quality, to resolve issues & improve monitoring techniques. There will be opportunities to collaborate with colleagues across Hydrometry & Telemetry and the EA to share good practice.
This role will involve office and field-based activities including working in & near water. Training will be provided.
Incident response remains a top priority for the Environment Agency. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
The successful candidate will join our highly motivated Hydrometry & Telemetry Team in East Midlands area.
Our friendly, inclusive team operates and installs hydrometric and telemetry assets to ensure high quality data is available for customers 24/7. We work with colleagues in other teams, share knowledge freely, develop individual strengths and utilising the latest technological advances to ensure we are continuously improving our essential monitoring service
Experience/skills required
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who enjoys identifying and resolving problems, working with data, and collaborating with others.
You will be proactive, demonstrate good use of initiative and demonstrate outstanding communication skills. Working effectively on your own or in teams will be a key part of this role.
Essential:
- Experience working with data
- Problem solving skills for working effectively and supporting others
- Willingness to learn skills and systems
- Well organised and able to re-prioritise workloads
- Able to swim as you will be working in and near water
Desirable:
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring equipment and telemetry systems.
- Experience of installing and maintaining monitoring equipment would be beneficial.
- Experience managing large datasets and systems would be beneficial. Examples may include data entry, validation, error checking and resolution
