Job Description

Division/Department: Resource Management/Environmental

Location: Fond du Lac Resource Management and Tribal Court Building

Reports To: Water Projects Coordinator

Probationary Period: 90 days – Full time; 120 days – Part time

FLSA Status: Exempt (salaried) 

Classification: Non – Child Related – NA

Driver’s License: Level 1- Class D Driver’s License is required.

Starting Pay:  $69,240.53 – $77,895.59

Responsibilities

  • Conduct ongoing groundwater monitoring projects, and design and conduct new hydrogeological investigations to ensure accurate and appropriate data is available for use in water management decisions.
  • Assist OWP staff with data analysis, mapping and graphic visualization of surface and groundwater interactions and hydrologic parameters such as groundwater levels, lake levels, stream discharge, residence time, wetland hydrology, biogeochemical cycling
  • Work with other Resource Management Division staff as needed to perform hydrologic surveys, basic modeling, and GIS mapping of aquatic resources.
  • Review environmental assessments, project proposals to identify potential impacts to tribally important resources.
  • Work with OWP team to identify, plan and implement appropriate restoration projects for impaired aquatic resources.
  • Prepare scientific or technical reports and presentations to communicate information and recommend solutions.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Must attend mandatory department trainings.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.  
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.

  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.   

Qualifications

  • Class D Driver’s License is required.
  • Master’s degree in hydrology, geology, environmental science or related discipline; or Bachelor’s degree and five years’ work experience in a relevant environmental or natural resources field is required.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, databases and/or data entry, spreadsheets and Microsoft Outlook is required.
  • Database management, data analysis, and geospatial technology skills (ArcGIS), are required.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring technology, including dataloggers, piezometers, pumps, etc. is required.  
  • Experience with process-based groundwater/catchment hydrology models is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish work priorities is required.
  • Knowledge of Native American communities, culture, customs, and beliefs is preferred.
  • Experience working with Native American Clients, communities and is able to demonstrate cultural sensitivity is preferred
  • Ability to meet deadlines as demonstrated by the timely completion of reports, plans, and other types of work is required.
  • The Hydrologist will be expected to attend professional meetings and training workshops in related fields.
  • Valid driver’s license and experience with motorized boats required. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.  
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.  
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.  
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.  
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.  
  • Travel is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Will be expected to perform various physical activities involved in field work on lakes, streams, uplands and wetlands, including walking over uneven terrain, lifting, paddling a canoe, handling field gear and equipment; must be able to swim.  
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including snake or insect bites and stings and work in adverse weather conditions.
