JOB TITLE: Aquatics and Outreach Project Coordinator

JOB TYPE: Full-Time seasonal

LOCATION

The position is based within the Jemseg Grand Lake Watershed. Office-related tasks and data analysis will be conducted remotely from the candidate’s home. The successful candidate will be required to submit their bi-weekly work schedule to the organization’s board for review and coordination.

TERM AND SALARY

The term of this position is from late April – early May (TBD), to August 29, 2025. The position is compensated at a rate of $26 to $30 per hour (depending on experience and skills) and is based on a regular work week of 37.5 hours. Some weekend work is required. Opportunities for extension beyond the stated term will depend on the success of funding applications. Gas expenses incurred for work-related travel will be reimbursed at a fixed rate.

The Jemseg Grand Lake Watershed Association (JGLWA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the Jemseg Grand Lake watershed’s ecological integrity. Encompassing an expansive area of 3,950 square kilometers, the watershed includes Grand Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the Maritime provinces, spanning 171 square kilometers. The JGLWA is committed to fostering a culture of collective responsibility and environmental stewardship. Through science-based ecological monitoring, restoration, and education, we strive to advance awareness of critical conservation issues and promote best management practices to sustain and improve the health of the watershed

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position is a unique opportunity to work in a vast and ecologically significant area in New Brunswick. The successful candidate will help the JGLWA to plan, manage and deliver the organization projects and help grow the organization’s working relationships with the community, environmental organization and the provincial government.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Project Management
    1. Develop and manage project plans, timelines, and budgets to ensure projects are completed on time and within scope.
    1. Document and report JGLWA activities, including taking photos for social media, website content, and funder reporting.
  • Monitoring Activities
    • Coordinate and conduct survey and removal activities for the EWM monitoring program, including ecological data collection and volunteer training.
    • Lead pilot EWM removal projects at designated sites, promoting awareness and prevention strategies like “Clean, Drain, and Dry.”
    • Support cyanobacteria activity monitoring through kit distribution, training, and sample reporting.
    • Conduct periodic water quality sampling and reporting (ideally four times per season).
  • Outreach and Community Engagement
    • Act as the spokesperson for JGLWA at events, conferences, and community meetings.
    • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with partners, including government agencies, environmental groups, and community organizations.
    • Plan and implement engagement events, such as “Adopt a Shoreline,” to increase awareness and membership.
    • Recruit, coordinate, and manage volunteers for various initiatives.
    • Social Media and Promotion
  • Create and manage social media content to increase awareness of the organization activities, ensuring resources and past successes are effectively highlighted to engage the community in current projects.
  • Fundraising and Reporting
    • Identify and pursue fundraising opportunities, including grant applications and partnerships with governments, foundations, and corporate entities.
    • Work closely with the association members to review and pursue new initiatives.
    • Prepare detailed reports for funders to ensure compliance and accountability.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A university degree or college diploma in aquatic ecology, conservation biology, natural resource management, or a related field, with at least 1 year of professional experience.
  • Knowledge of New Brunswick landscapes, communities, and conservation challenges, along with working knowledge of conservation planning processes.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, including proficiency in social media management.
  • Experience engaging and managing volunteers, with an understanding of best practices for volunteer coordination.
  • Project development experience, including the preparation of grant funding applications, project proposals, budgets and progress reports.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including problem-solving, planning, attention to detail, and the ability to meet timelines.
  • Proven ability to develop, track, and report on environmental programs.
  • Flexibility, reliability, self-motivation, and a strong interest in fieldwork, with the ability to work independently.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the Jemseg Grand Lake Watershed.
  • Comfort with remote and physically demanding fieldwork conditions.
  • Experience using handheld GPS units for navigation and familiarity with GIS software.
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record and access to an insured vehicle.
  • Experience operating motorized boats is considered an asset.
