By joining the Division of Water, Water Quality Branch as an Environmental Scientist II, you will work with a talented team of scientists that determine where Kentucky’s waterways are not meeting standards for uses such as recreation and aquatic life. You will conduct detailed analyses to determine sources of pollutants to develop Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) reports and other similar plans that outline steps to curb those sources and restore the waterway’s uses.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist with data compilation, review, and analysis related to impaired waters and development of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) reports
- Assist with development and application of water quality models to support water quality restoration and protection
- Provide technical assistance related to impaired waters and water quality restoration plans, including TMDLs.
- Assist with upkeep of and enhancements to the Kentucky Water Health Portal and other applications that manage and share data related to water quality, impaired waters, designated uses, and water quality restoration efforts.
Sklls and Expectations include, but are not limited to the following:
- Experience and skill managing and analyzing environmental data.
- Skill with data analysis, visualization, and communication.
- Knowledge of chemical, physical, and biological properties and dynamics of rivers, streams, lakes, and their watersheds.
- Experience and skill with using geographic information systems (particularly ArcGISPro and ArcGIS Online).
- Basic knowledge of water pollution control and water resources management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: One year of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in the position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which require the following of safety procedures.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
