The Athabasca Watershed Council is seeking a Seasonal/Full-Time – Watershed Science Technician to assist the Healthy Shorelines Project Coordinator and Headwaters Project Coordinator with the AWC’s Healthy Shorelines Initiative and AWC’s Healthy Headwaters initiative.

This position is remote/hybrid (with the option of working out of the Athabasca head office or your own home office). In your cover letter, please indicate when you will be available to start. 

Start date: May 2025.  

Duties include:

  • Assist the Watershed Science Program Manager and Healthy Shorelines Project Coordinator with the Healthy Shorelines Initiative (riparian and wetland restoration and conservation) 
  • Assist the Headwater Project Coordinator with the Healthy Headwaters Initiative (riparian restoration planning, conservation, research, community outreach and public engagement events)
  • Assist with on-the-ground projects that include planting, watering, and site documentation 
  • Research and development of science related materials and factsheets 
  • Assist with water quality monitoring  
  • Share your passion and interest for land and water conservation by supporting local stewardship groups 
  • Assist with outreach and educational activities  
  • Contribute stories and pictures to use in our outreach materials such as newsletters and social media
  • Various duties within an office and field setting 

Qualifications and Requirements: 

  • You have a diploma or degree in biology, environmental science, agriculture, or another science program 
  • You are between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment 
  • You are a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act 
  • You are legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations  
  • You are interested in watershed management, riparian areas, and wetlands 
  • The quality of the work you produce is important to you 
  • You are comfortable working with various groups of all ages 
  • You have good written/spoken English and effective communication skills 
  • You are a good writer, presenter and public speaker 
  • You have good research, Office Suite and social media skills 
  • You are effective working independently and as part of a team 
  • You are available to work some evenings and weekends 
  • You have a valid Class 5 driver’s license, a computer, and access to an internet connection.  
  • You have the ability to plant trees and water plants.  

Additional Skills/Knowledge (preferred but not required) 

  • Experience in working with Indigenous communities, with an understanding of Treaty and Inherent Rights and cultural worldviews 
  • Experience or interest in local ecology and/or fish biology 
  • Background or interest in aquatic invasive species management and monitoring 
  • Experience and passion for responsible angling, outdoor recreation and the ability to champion responsible use of natural resources 
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Water Act, Federal Fisheries Act, Alberta Land Stewardship Act, and other provincial and federal policies and legislation pertaining to land, water and natural resource management
