This position may be based in any country in the Asia Pacific Region where TNC has an established entity. WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

Science staff at The Nature Conservancy help ensure that the organization’s actions are evidence-based. The Asia Pacific Senior Scientist provides technical, strategic, and staff leadership for the Conservancy across the Asia Pacific Region. Reporting to the Lead Scientist & Director of Conservation, Asia Pacific, the Senior Scientist is a key part of helping the Asia Pacific Region effectively and credibly achieve the Conservancy’s 2030 Goals.

The Asia Pacific Senior Scientist is responsible for science leadership and maintaining science excellence through the cutting-edge nature of their own research and through stewardship (mentoring, training, connecting) of conservation and science staff across the Asia Pacific. They are responsible for a range of science functions for the Conservancy across the Asia Pacific Region. These include:

  • Conduct original research and publish findings to advance the evidence base for existing and emerging conservation strategies in support of the Conservancy’s organizational goals. Research needs are likely to include designing and testing conservation interventions, predicting the impact of potential strategies for nature, climate, and people, developing monitoring and evaluation systems to track the Conservancy’s conservation impact, and determining priority areas for the Conservancy’s work.
  • Support the Asia Pacific Region’s Portfolio Management process by focusing science effort on assessing evidence gaps in our conservation approaches and working with country programs and global colleagues to help close these.
  • Supervise staff within the Asia Pacific Regional office, including the Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning team.
  • Supporting professional development and capacity building for science staff across the Asia Pacific Region.
  • Develop a strategy and process for increasing publication rates across the Conservancy’s Asia Pacific programs, with special attention towards female, indigenous and under-represented science staff.
  • Foster science collaborations with TNC Global and external partners.
  • Help ensure effective use and implementation of the Conservancy’s Asia Pacific Innovation Fund.
  • Communicate to diverse audiences and actively support fundraising for the Conservancy’s work.
  • They contribute expertise to cross-cutting science issues and represent the organization in external events and partnerships.
  • Collaborate closely with science staff across the Conservancy’s global teams and represent Asia Pacific on organizational project or science committees.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Lead work of major strategic importance to the Conservancy through management of multi-disciplinary teams, particularly to address evidence gaps in support of AP’s conservation Portfolio Management process.
  • Staff supervision including performance management and career development.
  • Develop work plans and project budgets.                                    
  • May manage a grant or contract or write fundraising proposals.     
  • Provide training for internal and external colleagues on conservation science principles and implementation.
  • Supporting other TNC staff in the Region to publish their science.
  • Strengthen the use of Conservation Science within the organization.
  • Foster appropriate risk taking and innovation within the organization.
  • Extensive travel international travel (20% or more), including in variable weather conditions at remote locations.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Master’s Degree in science related field and 4 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
  • Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience directing a major program of strategic importance and working with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience in relationship building with peers, partners, government agencies, land owners, academic Community, etc.
  • Proficient communication skills, written, spoken and graphical.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • PhD preferred and 3-5 years related experience considered.
  • Ability to diagnose complex problems and identify solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, written, spoken and graphical.
  • Ability to operate within budget guidelines to ensure sound financial performance.
  • Ability to resolve large-scale, complex problems through systematic, thorough studies.
  • Ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with all levels of management and staff.
  • Experience with networking in the scientific and conservation community.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in conservation science and other related disciplines.
  • Experience working with methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives.
  • Spatial analysis and GIS skills, including familiarity with ArcGIS.
  • Strong statistical analysis (ideally including Bayesian methods) and familiarity with R programming language.
  • Training experience.
  • An interest in capacity building and diversity and equity in science.
  • Independent and self-motivated with the ability to participate effectively in a remote team environment.
