This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
The Geologist/Hydrogeologist position will support several state-wide groundwater management initiatives through field investigations and groundwater modeling.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the statewide ambient groundwater quality monitoring program through sampling and analysis of PFAS and other emerging contaminant species.
- Assist with the development of Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPP) mandated by EPA for quality assurance on groundwater quality data.
- Support a regional groundwater monitoring network, including water level measurements, data logger maintenance, sample collection, and database management.
- Conduct and support groundwater resource studies through field investigations and modeling.
- Stay informed on emerging compounds research and its impact on groundwater investigations and remediation.
- Coordinate groundwater data sharing and investigations with internal staff, state agencies (e.g., Waste Management, Health & Human Services, Soil & Water Conservation), local governments, non-profits, USEPA, USGS, and other stakeholders.
- Develop and present educational programs and workshops for students, teachers, environmental educators, environmental lawyers, non-profits, and division staff.
The Division of Water Resources:
The Division of Water Resources is responsible for protecting North Carolina’s drinking, surface and groundwater for all waterbodies including lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including permitting issuance, investigations, regulatory compliance and enforcement, monitoring and field assessments, certifications, laboratory analysis and testing, planning, water quality standards management, educational outreach and other efforts. The Division comprises six Sections: Water Quality Regional Operations; Water Sciences; Public Water Supply; Water Quality Permitting; Groundwater Resources, and Water Planning. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in geology, geosciences, physical science or a related field, or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science course work from an accredited college or university. Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the North Carolina Board for the Licensing of Geologists; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
