NPCA’s work supports the conservation, enhancement, and sustainability of healthy watersheds with programs and services that focus on drinking water source protection, flood and hazard management, endangered species protection, ecosystem restoration, community stewardship, education, and land management.
NPCA is the caretaker of 41 conservation areas within the Niagara Peninsula watershed held in public trust for recreation, heritage preservation, conservation, and education. These natural and shared greenspaces marry nature, culture, and adventure to create limitless opportunities for discovery.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Supervisor of Watershed Restoration and Stewardship, the Technician supports the implementation of high to medium complexity projects and leads those of medium to low complexity tasks and projects within the operations of NPCA’s restoration and stewardship services such as data collection, standard program administrative procedures and outreach. Primary responsibilities include project implementation spanning project engagement, design, planning, budget monitoring, site preparation, construction and post-monitoring, and communication with external stakeholders
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Supporting the analysis and interpretation of biological and biophysical information to develop tree-planting projects.•
- Coordinating and overseeing the delivery and completion of medium to low complexity restoration or stewardship projects and related program initiatives as required
- Planning and facilitating the design of various low complexity restoration and stewardship project types including wetland and upland habitat creation and enhancements, instream works and riparian habitat improvements, agricultural best management practices, water quality improvement initiatives, flood and erosion mitigation in both riverine and shoreline contexts, and other general naturalization efforts or nature-based solutions
- Providing in-field implementation of planting and restoration project plans as provided.
- Collecting field data collection requirements throughout project life cycle.
- Supporting project implementation from site preparation through planting and monitoring
- Collaborating with private landowners, municipal partners, and other project specific contractors in support of project planning
- Attending relevant outreach events to promote NPCA programming and build community/agency support for a coordinated approach to ecological restoration across the watershed, as needed
What you Bring
- Post-secondary education in Forestry, Environmental Science or related.
- Relevant experience implementing afforestation or ecological restoration projects
- Native Seed Collection Certification an asset
- Experience in effective communications and stakeholder relations including community engagement
- The ability to work effectively as part of a high performing team within tight deadlines
Compensation: An hourly salary starting at $38.60 (Union Grade 4 – 35 hours/week – 2025 rate)
Home Base Location: NPCA Main Office – 3350 Merrittville Hwy, Thorold with travel within the watershed
