Introduction

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring a Floodplain Engineer at the Entry, Senior or Advanced level dependent upon candidate qualifications.

This position may be headquartered in any DNR Office in WI, depending on space availability and the location of the selected candidate.

Remote work may be available for a portion of the work week, after the initial onboarding period.

Position Summary

This position provides technical expertise in the development of comprehensive watershed wide floodplain engineering studies. This position will ensure that the floodplain studies produced by the Floodplain Mapping Program meet state and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) standards and will be responsible for managing contracts and assuring the work quality of surveying and engineering consulting firms completing work for the Floodplain Mapping Program.

Salary Information

Starting pay for Entry level is $31.18 to $35.50 per hour (or $64,854.40 to $73,840 annually), in addition to excellent benefits and in pay schedule/range 14-14.

Starting pay for Senior level is between $36.00 to $41.00 per hour (or $74,880 to $85,280 annually), in addition to excellent benefits and in pay schedule/range 14-13.

Starting pay for Advanced level is between $42.00 to $46.50 per hour (or $87,360 to $96,720 annually), in addition to excellent benefits and in pay schedule/range 14-13.

In addition, there is $2080/year added to your base salary for holding a Professional Engineer (PE) license, whether it is held presently or acquired in the future. A PE is not a requirement for this position.

This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Remote Work: Based on an assessment of the goals and work activities, this position may be eligible for remote work. Remote work approval is based on individual circumstances and is subject to supervisor approval and DNR remote work policies. Approval is subject to change without notice based on business needs. Employees with approved remote work arrangements are generally expected to work within the state of Wisconsin.

Travel: Occasional travel throughout the state will be required for meetings and/or trainings.

Special Requirement: The selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:

  • Have a valid drivers license
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience
  • Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at fault accidents in the past two (2) years
  • Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year

Qualifications

To be minimally qualified applicants must meet (and provide appropriate documentation) of at least one of the below requirements: 

  • Have graduated or will graduate by time of appointment from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field such as electrical, mechanical, civil or environmental engineering; OR
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer as determined by the Department of Safety and Professional Services per s. 443.04, Wis. Stats.; OR
  • A specific record, issued by the professional engineering section of the Department of Safety and Professional Services, showing 4 years or more of experience in engineering work of a character satisfactory to the professional engineering section and satisfactory completion of the fundamentals of engineering exam; OR
  • Have equivalent professional training and practical experience so as to be deemed a professional engineer as defined in Department of Safety and Professional Services per s. 443.01, Wis. Stats. and also deemed to be qualified to engage in professional engineering practice as determined by the Department of Safety and Professional Services per s. 443.03, or 443.04, or 443.05, Wis. Stats.
