Job Description:

Environmental Specialists in Nebraska play a crucial role in upholding significant segments of the state’s Safe Drinking Water Act and Title 179 – Regulations Governing Public Water Supply Systems within a designated compliance region. Their duties encompass reviewing data, conducting compliance assessments, and initiating and overseeing enforcement measures. Additionally, they actively contribute to departmental initiatives, engage in public education efforts, and offer ongoing support to regulated entities. A steadfast dedication to public health and environmental stewardship is imperative in fulfilling the diverse responsibilities of this role.

Job Duties: 
•    Review water quality monitoring data and technical reports submitted by public water systems to assess compliance with regulatory requirements. 
•    Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to enforcement actions. Administer the Department’s database by executing precise and timely data input and implementing tracking programs.  
•    Provide technical assistance and guidance to public water systems on compliance with drinking water regulations, treatment processes, and sampling procedures.  Conduct outreach and educational activities to raise awareness of and promote compliance with regulatory requirements.
•    Collaborate with state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders to coordinate enforcement and assistance efforts and share information on drinking water quality issues. 
•    Must be able to effectively prioritize tasks and manage time, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in juggling multiple objectives.

Environmental Specialists play a vital role in guaranteeing that the citizens of Nebraska have access to safe drinking water. This position coordinates closely with engineering and field services to support the initiatives of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Location:  245 Fallbrook Blvd – Suite #100 – Lincoln, NE

Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Flexible schedule and 10-hour workdays maybe allowed with management approval.

Dress Code:  Business Casual

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in the physical sciences, natural sciences, environmental science, geology, biology, agronomy, civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, hydrology, community and regional planning, or a related field.  Experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications: Time Management skills; Critical Thinking skills; Data Management skills including data analysis, ArcGIS, Microsoft Access experience; Organization; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Interpersonal skills; Ability to adapt and change priorities quickly. 

Other: 
    Valid driver’s license or the ability to provide independent transportation 
    Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 
Knowledge Of: the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS), Public Water Systems, and NAC Title 179.

Skill In: public speaking, technical writing, collaboration, policy development 

Ability To: conduct technical compliance tracking, respond to water quality complaints, contribute to special projects and reports, establish and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders, represent the Department at regional conferences,
