Wetlands are often among the last remnants of semi-natural habitat available in human-dominated landscapes, making them critical for native biodiversity. Accordingly, over a dozen wetland systems are listed as threatened ecological communities under the EPBC Act. Yet wetlands often exist in these landscapes only because they are currently too wet for alternative uses. Climate change, particularly on-going drying, could alter this delicate balance. To plan for future impacts on wetland biodiversity the magnitude of these changes must be understood but potential impacts range from shifts in species composition to complete loss of wetland habitat. To help plan for this uncertain future, the consequences of changing water availability for wetland biodiversity must be better understood.
Skills / background required: This project would suit a student with research interests in understanding the impacts of global change for biodiversity conservation in threatened wetland ecosystems. There is an opportunity for the student to influence the nature of the questions to be addressed, which aspects of biodiversity to be studied and the methods to be applied. Depending on the research interests and experience of potential students, this could involve a focus on theoretical modelling, remote analysis methods, field-based research or some combination of these.
