Job Summary and Requirements

This is a 12 month term position with consideration for a Temporary Assignment.

The Water Resources Branch is seeking a groundwater technologist to join our groundwater program which undertakes a variety of activities aimed at ensuring the protection of Yukon’s groundwater resources.

The position is responsible for conducting environmental monitoring, data management and analysis, and reporting for groundwater studies across the territory. The Water Resources Technologist – Groundwater is also responsible for the operation of a long-term groundwater monitoring network, including groundwater well installation. The incumbent participates in baseline monitoring, water resources audits, and other groundwater studies. The position is part of a multi-disciplinary team involved in providing hydrogeology, water quality, and hydrology expertise and input toward development assessment processes and project reviews.

Essential Qualifications

Please submit your application (no cover letter is needed) clearly demonstrating how you meet the following qualifications. Upon submission of your application you will be required to complete a questionnaire directly related to the essential qualifications for this position.   • A diploma or degree in chemistry, earth sciences, environmental sciences, or related scientific or technical discipline;
  • Demonstrated experience with groundwater data collection (e.g. well purging, groundwater sampling, groundwater level measurement, datalogger installation, hydraulic testing, etc.) for monitoring of various undertakings and baseline monitoring;
  • Strong proficiency in the management, analysis, and interpretation of continuous and discrete groundwater data using specialized software;
  • Demonstrated experience conducting groundwater investigations, and presenting data and information in reports;
  • Experience planning and leading field trips to remote locations;
  • Demonstrated experience conducting and/or supporting reviews of environmental assessments/development projects and regulatory matters (e.g. water licences, quartz mine reviews, and land use planning) from a groundwater perspective will be considered an asset;
  • Demonstrated experience conducting surface water quality and hydrology monitoring will be considered an asset.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability

Candidates should have and may be assessed on:

  • Recent experience in the design and installation (including drilling supervision) of groundwater monitoring wells;
  • Sound understanding of hydrogeology and aqueous geochemistry;
  • Knowledge of hydrogeological data collection techniques and instrumentation;
  • Proficiency with discrete and continuous groundwater quality and quantity data management software (e.g. EQWin, Aquarius), hydrogeological modelling programs, aquifer testing software, statistical analysis packages and software (i.e. R) used to generate geological cross-sections and conduct other statistical analyses, and geographic information software (i.e. ArcGIS);
  • Communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with others;
  • Ability to interpret and present technical data to a wide variety of audiences;
  • Ability to plan, manage and implement work plans with a high degree of accuracy, consistency and data quality;
  • Ability to manage changing priorities, problem solve, and improvise in the field.

Additional Information:

Conditions of Employment: Valid Class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent

Job Requirements: Field work in all weather conditions and remote areas (up to 5 day duration), lifting of heavy objects, travel via ATVs, snowmobiles, helicopters and small planes, working with a variety of hand and power tools. Must be capable of performing in environments with significant physical challenges, hazards and dangers.
