SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS  

Reporting to the Specialist, Watershed Monitoring, this position will be responsible for the collection, summary, and management of fish community and geomorphology data for CVC’s Integrated Watershed Monitoring Program (IWMP). This position will also co-lead the collection of water temperature and water chemistry data. In addition, the successful candidate will assist with collection, management, compilation, analysis, and reporting of related abiotic and biotic monitoring data.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 

  • Post-secondary education in biology, ecology, environmental science or a related environmental field. Master of Science would be an asset; equivalent experience may be considered. 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience related to major tasks.
  • Excellent Ontario fish identification skills.
  • Demonstrated backpack electrofishing experience.
  • CA Level 1 (or equivalent) electrofishing training and experience leading sampling crews.
  • Standard First Aid certification with CPR and AED
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s License 
  • Experience with some, or all, of the following would be an asset: water temperature logger deployment; water chemistry sampling protocols and equipment; fluvial geomorphology sampling techniques, including use of a total station. 
  • Willingness, ability and experience working in and around fast flowing streams, and in adverse environmental conditions (e.g. biting insects, heat, rain, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment, with strong organizational and communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Proven technical writing skills (examples will be required if an interview is granted), with experience using Microsoft Office Suite Software (Word, Excel, Access). Demonstrated experience and skill with data entry and other components of information management.

SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS 

Field Data Collection

  • Conduct field work for approximately 6 months using standardized methodologies, leading the collection of fish, water temperature, water chemistry and geomorphology data for CVCs Integrated Watershed Monitoring Program. 
  • Hire and supervise field staff during the monitoring season. 
  • Conduct pre-monitoring activities such as equipment preparation and maintenance, scheduling, and other logistics.

Information Management

  • Lead and conduct data entry and quality control of fish community, water temperature, and geomorphology monitoring data. 
  • Maintain and organize physical and electronic data sheets and associated files.

Data Reporting and Analysis

  • Lead summarization of fish, water temperature, and geomorphology monitoring data.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the monitoring team to analyze and interpret environmental data.
  • Prepare sections of annual reports, monitoring protocols and other documents as needed. 
  • Summarize and share information (i.e. report or presentation) on monitoring protocols and topics relevant to stream ecology or monitoring; adjust style based on audience.

 Other duties and projects as appropriate to the position.
