WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Global Freshwater Fisheries Equity Advisor (“Advisor”) assists in the development and implementation of the Freshwater Fisheries strategy within the Provide Food and Water team at TNC and helps drive implementation of the overall business plan to achieve planned conservation outcomes. The Advisor supports the strategy’s leadership by managing priority projects and serves as an advisor to help projects and programs consider how to equitably distribute benefits across communities. The global Freshwater Fisheries strategy is focused on supporting inland fisheries under Indigenous and community leadership, often in low- and middle-income countries such as in the Amazon Basin and in sub-Saharan Africa, where we seek to achieve biodiversity and human well-being outcomes, and where different members of society play an important yet sometimes underappreciated role. This may include providing expert equity advice to field staff, collecting data, conducting literature reviews, writing reports, managing contracts with specialists, and participating in national and international dialogues on matters related to equity.

The Advisor collaborates with staff in different countries in their work with fishing communities to assess and document their equity related needs. The Advisor also tracks corporate practices, governmental policies and decisions, and the practices or views of other stakeholders involved in the Freshwater Fisheries strategy and their potential impact on organizational conservation goals. They may develop and/or advise TNC communications, marketing and philanthropy staff on issues related to equity within the Freshwater Fisheries strategy and related issues.

They serve as a key liaison and informational contact between the Freshwater Fisheries strategy team and other TNC staff, including the Global Equitable Conservation team, as well as external actors, including community organizations, government agencies, corporations, NGOs and other groups as applicable.  The Advisor tracks and/or assesses corporate practices, governmental policies and decisions, or the practices or views of other stakeholders concerning equity in the freshwater fisheries sector and their potential impact on organizational conservation goals.  They advise TNC communications, marketing and philanthropy staff on issues related to the Freshwater Fisheries strategy and related issues and help ensure that TNC’s internal and external communications accurately reflect the strategy and conservation goals.

This position involves both domestic and international travel of up to 25%.

This is a fixed-term, two-year position that may be extended in accordance with applicable country-specific employment laws and business requirements.
