You will be part of a key team delivering flood risk modelling, providing the evidence to support the foundation of the Environment Agency’s capital programme and supporting reducing the flood risk to people across the country.
You will be responsible for dealing with some of the most complex flood risk modelling challenges faced in England today. You will be a technical expert in flood risk modelling, providing expert advice and offering technical solutions. You will champion the importance of flood risk modelling evidence within the business. This role involves working with others to identify skills gaps and helping to drive improvements in the modelling capabilities of our teams. You will be mindful of our corporate priorities, programmes of work, and funding directions. Using these skills and information, you will regularly work with senior management to flag issues, create, share, and drive solutions. In this role, you will be a leading force for flood risk modelling in the Environment Agency.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team Â
This role sits within Evidence and Risk, the home of flood risk modelling in the Environment Agency. We are a national team who provide expert analysis and advice for flood management, data, modelling and hydrology. The team is comprised of modellers, hydrologists, data scientists and mapping specialists who contribute to delivering the best possible outcomes for flood risk, provide evidence for determining potential impacts on communities and inform flood risk management and incident management decisions.
Experience/skills required Â
To perform this role we require someone with strong and demonstrable experience of:
Expert technical competence in flood risk modelling, demonstrated through:
– Expert technical leadership in fluvial hydraulic modelling
– Expert knowledge and extensive experience in fluvial hydraulic modelling
Application and development of modelling technical standards
Ability to support and respond to escalated issues
Effectively prioritising across a wide set of responsibilities
Excellent communication skills, proactively engaging with staff and delivery partners
Challenging the technical performance of delivery partners
Using technical knowledge to help influence at a strategic level
Support, encourage and develop the skills of our technical staff
Accreditation at relevant professional body is desirableContact and additional information

Competence 3: Takes Decisions and Solves Problems
