Why does the job exist?

The Hydrology Bureau conducts hydrologic analysis to support water rights administration, interstate steam compact compliance, settlements and adjudications, subdivision review and other water resource management and planning functions in support of the agency mission. Bureau staff is comprised of hydrologists, geologists, scientists and engineers that provide technical hydrologeologic expertise to the agency in evaluating hydrologic data and developing hydrologic models. Depending upon the background and interest of the intern, a specific project may be developed  to augment their experience and education in the field of hydrology, hydrogeology, and engineering.

How does it get done?

Assist Bureau Staff in compiling project-oriented technical data for hydrologic models including aquifer tests and geologic data collection and review and reviewing and contributing to technical and scientific reports. Assisting with the development, review and testing of hydrologic models and other computational tools.

Who are the customers?

The general public, water right owners, realtors, brokers, consultants and agency staff members.

Ideal Candidate

This position will result in a hydro logic project that will assist the Bureau and Agency staff with technical evaluation. The student will learn best practices for hydrology and engineering evaluations pertaining to water resources in the state, learn about data sources and tools used in hydrologic evaluations, and better understand how water is managed moving forward. The student will complete a report documenting their work that may also serve as documentation for their project’s use by the agency.

Minimum Qualification

Currently enrolled in a Graduate School Program at an accredited college or university OR completion of at least two (2) semesters (or equivalent) of a graduate level program at an accredited college or university within the last two (2) years.

Employment Requirements

This position will not drive a state vehicle.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.  Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.  Use of Xerox machine, scanners, printers and telephone.
