We’re looking for an experienced Groundwater Modeller with extensive experience of constructing and applying conceptual and numerical groundwater models to join our Southeast Groundwater modelling unit. You will help deliver a comprehensive programme of regulatory groundwater model development, update, and use in support of business decisions in local operations to ensure our groundwater models support regulation of groundwater to protect the environment and deliver for the businesses we regulate. In this role you will support the Environment Agency’s groundwater modelling programme in the Southeast of England and be an active member of the wider groundwater modelling community.

The team

You’ll join our Southeast Groundwater Modelling Unit which sits within the Environment Agency Thames Area Groundwater and Contaminated Land team. The unit provides technical support to the Environment Agency Areas of Thames, Hertfordshire and North London, Kent, South London and East Sussex and Solent and South Downs. We are a dispersed team and use smart tools to stay connected.

Experience/skills required

Essential:

  • Significant industry or regulatory experience as a groundwater resource modeller working with or developing groundwater models.
  • Technical skills in hydrogeology: e.g., constructing and interpreting conceptual and numerical models.
  • Experience with MODFLOW, GIS mapping software and coding
  • Honours degree (or equivalent), and ideally a MSc level qualification (or equivalent), in geology / hydrogeology or relevant equivalent discipline.
  • Proactive, self-motivated and a sure communicator

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Environment Agency groundwater models highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of the hydrogeology of the geological strata found in the Southeast of England or equivalent desirable.
  • Chartership, or a commitment towards working for chartership.

Competence 1: Multi-dimensional Conceptualisation
Description
Collects and visualises information in three or four dimensions in order to gain a greater understanding of the information (ie three spatial dimensions plus time).

Please explain your experience of the development of conceptual and numerical groundwater models and how you have used groundwater investigations and modelling to support decision-making.

Competence 2: Data and Information Management
Description
Collects, analyses, interprets, records, manages, develops and shares data, material or information appropriately for a variety of purposes.

Please describe your actions related to data and information management during a key groundwater modelling project(s) that you have been involved with. Examples of MODFLOW models preferable.

Competence 3: Takes Decisions and Solves Problems
Description
Finds and delivers optimal solutions by effectively analysing all the information, probing to develop alternatives and taking sound and timely decisions.

Please describe a groundwater modelling project or programme of work that you have delivered, focusing on the actions taken by you to overcome any challenges encountered. Examples of MODFLOW models preferable.

Competence 4: Focuses on Customers and Partners
Description
Addresses the needs of internal and external customers, provides rapid and effective responses. In this role you will work with range of stakeholders both internal Environment Agency colleagues as well as external partner organisations so experience of being able to address and respond to customers’ requirements will be essential.
