Why does the job exist?
This position is an advanced professional position within the Superfund Oversight Section of the GWQB. This technical staff position is responsible for performance of oversight and management assistance of remedial actions at Superfund sites. The position is also responsible for site investigations of environmental contamination for evaluation through the Hazard Ranking System (HRS) to determine Superfund eligibility. All work is performed in accordance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, commonly known as “Superfund”) and the National Contingency Plan (NCP). This position performs advanced project management and provides expertise in highly specialized technical fields of hydrology, geology, chemistry, and engineering for investigation groundwater contamination sites and implementing cleanup of Superfund sites in compliance with appropriate state and federal regulations.

– Responsible for providing technical support, oversight, guidance, and determination of compliance for Superfund sites in New Mexico to ensure consistency with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (Superfund) and the New Mexico Water Quality Act and Water Quality Control Commission Regulations and other state and federal statues, standards and regulations
– Frequent communication with stakeholders, government agencies, and the public
– Project management responsibilities include directing government contractors and managing budgets

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
– Field sampling
– Public outreach
– Considerable technical expertise in environmental assessment
– Remediation of hazardous waste contamination
– Evaluating groundwater hydrology
– Pertinent or similar regulatory experience
– Project management skills capable of leading site investigation and cleanup
– Excellent technical writing skills
– Ability to contribute in a team environment
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Science, Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Watershed Management, Physics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Forestry/Forest Science, Conservation Science, Wildlife Science, Emergency Management, or Engineering and four (4) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed mostly in an office setting with exposure to visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Occasional travel is required for training, meetings, field work with potential exposure to inclement weather, insects, machinery, hazardous and/or radioactive waste and chemicals.
