About the job

In this role, you will:

• participate in the planning, preparation and delivery of hydrology field projects in all seasons
• procure, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot specialized instrumentation to monitor hydrologic and climatologic processes
• procure, maintain, and troubleshoot field equipment such as ATVs and snowmobiles
• process and synthesize spatial and time-series data, conduct statistical analyses, prepare data summaries, and contribute to technical reports and scientific papers
• provide training to field and laboratory staff, students and partners

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

• You must have a valid class ‘G’ driver’s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver’s licence upon being hired.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
• You are able to travel to remote locations frequently and for multiple days.
• You have the physical ability to handle heavy equipment and work under adverse weather conditions.

Technical expertise:

• You have demonstrated knowledge of hydrological field sampling and monitoring methods in order to design and implement field programs.
• You have a demonstrated ability to deploy and operate specialized sampling equipment (e.g. snow samplers and sensors, total precipitation gages, pressure transducers, Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers, Gamma Radiation Snow Water Equivalent sensors etc.) to ensure data quality standards are met.
• You have demonstrated ability to use equipment such as ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles.

Specific knowledge:

• You have working knowledge of scientific hydrologic principles, concepts and practices and their application to water management.
• You have knowledge of streamflow generating processes and can interpret streamflow time-series based on those processes.
• You have knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Analytical skills:

• You have demonstrated analytical skills and experience working with various time-series and spatial data (e.g. streamflow and climate data, regional climate model data, remotely sensed data).
• You have applied knowledge of statistical methods to analyze hydrological data (e.g. time-series, spatial) and contribute to technical reports and scientific papers.
• You have demonstrated proficiency in computer programming languages (e.g. R, R-Shiny, Python, Matlab) to process, synthesize, and analyze time-series and spatial data.

Organizational skills:

• You possess strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects concurrently and solve problems.
• You can work in and lead a team with other staff and partners to meet required deliverables.

Interpersonal and communications skills:

• You possess proven interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate scientific information clearly and concisely with staff, the public, outside agencies, and research collaborators with tact and good judgment.
• You can effectively prepare written material for publication as presentations, technical reports and scientific papers.

Computer skills:

• You have demonstrated computer skills with statistical, geographic information systems, computer programming (e.g. R, R-Shiny, Python, Matlab), word processing, spreadsheet, database development, and presentation software to manage complex datasets and information.
