Job SummaryThe Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.The individual in this position will take an independent leadership role in scholarly activities, including developing research plans, writing research proposals, authoring and contributing to peer reviewed publications, presenting research results at scientific meetings, workshops, and conferences, and coordinating field and laboratory research as part of the Forest Ecohydrology and Watershed Science (FEWS) lab. The individual will focus their research efforts on forest disturbance effects on water quantity, water quality, and aquatic ecology.

Key Responsibilities35% – Identify potential grant proposal opportunities and lead the co-development and submission of research proposals.45% – Spatial and statistical analysis of data sets, interpretation of results from data, drawing conclusions from data interpretation, followed by communication of research at workshops or professional conferences and leading of authorship or co-authorship of publication of research results in peer reviewed journals.10% –Assist with leadership in the laboratory by helping organize field campaigns, lab analytical efforts, formal and informal mentoring, overall lab organization, hiring of temporary staff, purchasing, and shared lab communication platforms. Foster a safe, respectful, and welcoming work environment that supports the growth and development of student researchers.10% –Collect and/or compile research data from the field and in the laboratory.
What You Will NeedMust possess a PhD degree with a focus on applied aspects of landscape disturbance by the date of the interview and received from an accredited university.Demonstrated research or work experience related to climate and landscape disturbance influences on hydrology and soils in temperate or boreal ecosystems.Demonstrated experience with machine learning tools and development of novel remote sensing methods for use in ecological and hydrogeographic applicationsDemonstrated ability to lead collaborative research and the production of peer-reviewed publications and grant proposals to support future research.Demonstrated ability with statistical analyses in Python, ArcGis, QGIS, or similar.Ability to clearly communicate scientific concepts, findings, and results for broad audiences.Ability to interact respectfully and professionally with a wide range of stakeholders and researchers.
What We Would Like You to HavePrevious post-doctoral scholar experience.Demonstrated ability to lead collaborative grant proposals.Demonstrated ability to lead and plan fieldwork campaigns.Demonstrated ability to complete analysis of remotely sensed data such as Lidar point cloud analysis.Experience with multiple regression, logistic regression, machine learning, pipelining reproduceable workflow analyses, and other statistical/modeling approaches as applied to spatial inference.Evidence of effective mentorship of students and early career scientists in research and publications.Evidence of successful engagement with multiple governmental and non-governmental management agencies/groups.
Working Conditions / Work ScheduleThe proposed research will occur primarily in an office setting with periods of work outdoors in the field across uneven/rugged terrain and in the laboratory. The work may require overnight travel to field sites to collect necessary field samples or field data.
