ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY
Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.
YOUR TASKS
- You will conduct research in the framework of the project entitled Idealized modelling of the Scheldt estuary (IMOSE), funded by the Flemish government and carried out in close collaboration by the Hydraulics Laboratory (Department of Civil Engineering) of Ghent University and the Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics of Delft University of Technology.
- For evaluating the management strategies of an estuary, numerical models are needed for studying the effect of changes in natural or anthropogenic forcings upon the water motion, the transport of sediments and the evolution of the bed. Two, complementary types of models are needed: complex, process-based simulation models and idealized models. This project focuses on the latter type of models. By slightly simplifying the geometry, taking only the most essential physical processes into account and exploiting appropriate mathematical techniques (e.g. perturbation methods, asymptotic analysis, etc.), idealized models are computationally very efficient and can be analysed with the dynamical systems theory. Therefore, idealized models enable a systematic and extensive analysis of the sensitivity of model results to parameter values, parameterizations and forcings.
- Your tasks consist of developing and testing the mathematical techniques and the associated numerical source codes, for idealized modelling based upon the three-dimensional, tidally-induced water motion and transport of sediments, adopting a perturbation method.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a Master’s degree in engineering, preferably in the field of mathematical engineering
- You have a strong background in numerical techniques
- You have experience with development of numerical codes in python
- Having experience with numerical modelling of tidal systems and with idealized models in particular, is an asset
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- We offer you a contract of indefinite duration.
- Your contract will start on 1 April 2025 at the earliest.
- Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree). Click here for more information about our salary scales.
- All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
