Job Description

State Water Plan Specialist (Environmental Scientist II)

The Utah Division of Water Resources — housed within the Department of Natural Resources — is seeking an individual to join the newly-created State Water Plan section. This dynamic role offers the exciting opportunity to help shape the future of the state’s water resources through the production of the State Water Plan. Producing this plan will require collaborating with agency and community leaders, facilitating impactful discussions on water management, and transforming complex data and concepts into clear and engaging insights for various audiences. If you are passionate about contributing to Utah’s water future, are well organized, and a skilled communicator in both written and oral format, this could be the role for you. This position is currently a hybrid of both in-office 2 days a week required, and remote work days. Please note, a position’s eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the production of the State Water Plan (a guiding document that compiles years of data gathering, modeling and other collaborative efforts to identify when and where water will be needed throughout the state).
  • Research water resources topics and gather essential data and information to clearly and accurately communicate complex information for a general audience in written and oral format.
  • Contribute to the design of professional layouts for print and digital media.
  • Help coordinate and participate in outreach and engagement efforts with water agency leaders, agency representatives, key stakeholders and the general public.

Qualifications

Required

  • Written and verbal communication experience, including the ability to adapt communication style to effectively reach a wide range of audiences.
  • Motivation and genuine interest to help effectively manage Utah’s water resources.
  • Experience with outreach, education, and/or engagement of stakeholders, including the public.
  • Awareness of water resource issues in Utah.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other professionals.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Hydrology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Planning, Public.Administration, or a closely related field OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and paid professional employment directly related to the above tasks.

Preferred

  • Experience with water resources planning projects.
  • Experience with formatting, layout, etc. of print and digital media.
  • Understanding of basic water resources engineering principles and practices.
  • An advanced degree in Engineering, Hydrology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Planning, Public Administration, or a closely related field.

Supplemental Information

  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • Driver’s license required.
  • Travel required, most are day trips within the state.
  • Overnight travel may be required at times but would be minimal.
