Introduction / Background
The German WASH Network (GWN) in a collaborative effort with Global WASH Cluster (GWC) partners and with contributions from a multitude of international WASH experts and organisations has released the “Compendium of Sanitation Technologies in Emergencies” (2018), the “Compendium of Water Supply Technologies in Emergencies” (2020) and the “Compendium of Hygiene Promotion in Emergencies” (2022). This publication series can be considered humanitarian WASH standard works with expert peer-reviewed comprehensive systematic compilations of available technology choices and software measures along all relevant response phases and designed to be used both as a key sector capacity development and decision support tools. All three publications are also accessible through an interactive online Emergency WASH Knowledge Portal.
In an effort to further expand the series a fourth publication focusing on Solid Waste Management (SWM) in humanitarian settings has been developed and it is foreseen to also develop a corresponding online platform to be integrated into the existing Emergency WASH Knowledge Portal for which the German WASH Network is seeking assistance from a consultant.
Expected Tasks
To develop and implement an interactive, easy-to-navigate and easy-to-curate online version of the “Compendium of SWM in Humanitarian Settings” following the concept and structure of the already existing Emergency WASH Knowledge Portal. It includes:
- Setup & Administration: creating a copy of the existing sanitation sub-section of the platform. Emptying the relevant database contents and creating/preparing the new page structure based on the slightly different structure of the SWM Compendium. Expanding/setting up/integrating the existing Matomo account for recording the number of visitors to the website and adapting the existing integrated survey on the website.
- Programming: Adapting the categories in the database, the CMS backend and frontend. Includes adapting the main menu and view options in the various categories.
- Template adjustments: Adaptation of the CI of the website in colors – fonts and division of the subpages (page structure and layout). In particular, assigning the categories in the CMS extensions to the specified color codes – redefinition of the CSS classes that are generated from the respective identifier of the functional group.
- Content management: Preparation of the categories (Preparation, Technologies, X-Cutting Issue and Specific Waste Types) including graphics and HTML tables from the PDF print version of the SWM Compendium. Creation of the PDF files for individual chapters and links for download on the corresponding subpages. Upload and assignment of the SVG graphics to the technologies. Creation of the menu structures. Exchange of the help texts (filter options) in the database (language file). Change of the texts and graphics on the home page.
- Coordination, Service & Support: Coordination with <german WASH Network, documentation as part of the implementation of the website. Provision of daily rates for future security updates and potential extensions to the website.
The incorporation of content will be done by the German WASH Network.
Corporate Identity
The online version of the “Compendium of SWM in Humanitarian Settings” should have a similar visual appearance as the already existing sub-platforms of the Emergency WASH Knowledge Portal using a similar structure, color coding, graphics and design as in the Emergency SWM Compendium hard/softcopy version.
