The position is flexible in terms of location within the TNC Asia Pacific region, in countries where TNC may hire staff, with preference given to Australia, China, Mongolia, and New Zealand. There is no sponsorship for relocation and support for immigration and visa.

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

As part of the regional priority on rights-based and people-centered conservation to achieve equitable conservation outcomes TNC Asia Pacific region is anticipating the launch of a project aimed at empowering women to lead improved NRM and build resilience to the impacts of climate change in the Coral Triangle (Ultimate Outcome). Of the six CT countries, project activities will be implemented on-the-ground in four countries (Indonesia, Papua New Guinea – PNG, Solomon Islands, and the Philippines) with training and participation in learning exchanges in all six CT countries including Malaysia and Timor Leste.The Project Director provides overall leadership of priority projects and ultimately responsible for all aspects of the project. They bring technical expertise in rights-based approaches and gender equity in conservation, supporting TNC Asia Pacific in achieving its overall people-centered conservation objectives.

The Project Director – Coral Triangle Equitable Environmental Stewardship (Project Director) will serve as the lead staff person for the Project. They provide strategic direction of the Project and ensure alignment with TNC AP region priorities and donor requirements. They serve as a key liaison and informational contact between the TNC Asia Pacific Region, global strategy teams and country program teams, as well as external actors, including government agencies, NGOs and other groups as applicable. They provide technical expertise people-centered and rights-based conservation and ensure the integration of equitable principles into project strategies. They identify and resolve project issues and widely communicate solutions to relevant project stakeholders.

The Project Director lead the development and implementation of objectives, workplans, budgets and preparation of project reports in partnership with other project stakeholders. They will critically assess project strategies, ensuring all risks and dependencies are addressed in the project plan to fulfil the objectives. They will define roles and responsibilities, recruit, and lead the project teams to successfully achieve identified goals in the most cost-effective and time-saving manner possible.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Design and lead collaborative processes for the development and implementation of project strategies, workplans, budgets and report in partnership with other project stakeholders
  • Supervise a team of Project staff, establishing clear directions, setting “stretch” objectives, and overseeing execution of day-to-day work of the team
  • Coordinate the work of Project partners, other professionals, managing budget, and ensuring accountability and adaptive actions for the smooth and timely implementation of project strategies
  • Advise Project partners on people-centered and rights-based conservation
  • Provide input for the preparation of international and external materials, coordinating learning exchanges, trainings and workshops         
  • Work within a budget to complete projects, negotiates and contracts with vendors and assists with budget development.
  • Represent the Project internally and at external events
  • May involve domestic and international travel at approximately 20%
  • May require gaining cooperation of team over whom there is no direct supervisory authority.                                                                                                                                                     
  • Work proactively towards implementing organizational and funders’ strategic goals.
  • Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and funders’ requirements
  • Act independently and resolve Project issues.

We’re looking for an individual with fundraising or business development experience who wants to make a difference for nature and people.  The Conservancy is a global conservation leader and one of the top fundraising charities in the United States.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in conservation, political science, public policy, international relations, international development, social science or related field and at least 5 years of related experience, or equivalent combination.
  • Project development and/or project management experience of complex, cross-functional initiatives across large teams and partners, of which many may not report to this role.
  • Supervisory experience, including ability to set objectives, manage performance, guide diverse teams, and take corrective actions.
  • Experience in research, critical analysis, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports.
  • Experience presenting to and/or communicating with diverse audiences such as internal and external teams, senior leadership, governments, community or business leaders, and or partners.
  • Strong verbal and written command of the English language.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Master’s degree
  • Critical analytical thinking, ability to develop and drive project ideas and approaches, and excellent English writing skills are essential
  • Deep knowledge of, and fluency in people-centered and rights-based conservation in Asia Pacific region
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams across multiple organizational levels
  • Ability to write and speak in another language other than English spoken in the countries of AP Region, highly desirable
  • Ability to sensitively advise other staff on how to effectively engage with internal and external parties.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability to work well in a highly matrixed, decentralized and collaborative organization. Possesses strong interpersonal skills and political savvy. Must be a team player.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and adaptability.
