Duties and Responsibilities

Background The Arab Centre for Climate Change Policies at ESCWA conducts geospatial analysis of climate change impacts and vulnerability as part of its mandated activities under the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster. This work supports science-based policy discussions and priority-setting of vulnerability hotspots. The Economic Prosperity Cluster at ESCWA supports member States access innovative financial instruments that create fiscal space for pursing projects and programmes that respond to national development needs. Among these innovate instruments are climate/SDG debt swaps that draw upon climate change vulnerability assessments to inform programme preparation. Together, the clusters collaborate to provide country-driven support to member States for achieve their climate change and sustainable development goals. Objective The consultant will contribute to the geospatial mapping and analysis of climate change impacts on Arab States and the conduct of climate change vulnerability assessments in selected Arab countries. Duties and responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Sustainable Development Officer for Climate Change and the overall supervision of the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster Lead, the consultant would: • Create a digital library of geostatistical socio-economic and environmental datasets to inform climate change analysis in selected countries; • Prepare geospatial mapping layers and fact sheets; • Contribute to climate change vulnerability analysis; • Prepare presentations and inputs to reports; and • Participate in meetings and consultations with counterparts.

Qualifications/special skills

A Master’s degree in geography, climate change, engineering or environmental science is required. A Ph.D. is desirable. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of five years of experience working on geospatial research and analysis is required. Previous professional experience working with geospatial datasets related to climate change is required. Experience working in the Arab region is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English. Fluency in Arabic and French is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
