Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of the Natural Resource Innovation Section, the Irrigation Technologist, will be supporting the Alberta’s Irrigation Strategy for increased conservation, efficiency, and productivity of Alberta’s water resources. As the Irrigation Technologist, you will support the review of Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (S-CAP) Water Program grants under the on-farm irrigation efficiency stream, with the goal of modernizing Alberta’s on-farm irrigation systems for a more efficient use of water and energy. You will also support irrigation expansion through filing, scanning, adding metadata, and providing Land Classification information  for irrigation reports to irrigation districts, consulting agrologists and landowners.

Responsibilities: 

Some of the responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting Level II Land Classification for Irrigation report management. 
  • Supporting the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (S-CAP) Water Program. 
  • Supporting a safe and healthy workplace by adhering to all on-site safety protocols and requirements.
  • Performing administrative tasks, ensuring adherence to all Government of Alberta (GoA) and Ministry of Agriculture & Irrigation (AGI) policies.
  • Performing administrative tasks such as time reporting, expense claim submission, etc. Also responsible for the safe operations and maintenance of the government vehicles.

Qualifications

Required: 

  • Two (2) year technical diploma in a related field such as Agriculture Technology, Biology, Environmental Technology, with specialized education in irrigation management. 
  • No experience required. 
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License.


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education 


Assets: Preference will be given to candidates with;

  • Experience in irrigation management or land classification. 
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, shared filing systems such as UCM (Unified Communications Manager) and SharePoint.
  • Advanced knowledge of irrigation systems used in Alberta’s irrigated region and an understanding of their components, design, and their relative efficiencies.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s irrigation districts and private irrigation schemes.
  • Familiarity with the provincial irrigation water licensing prioritization process. 
  • Working knowledge of Alberta’s standards and procedures for the classification of land for irrigation.
  • Familiarity with the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (S-CAP) Water Program, on-farm irrigation efficiency stream, including the Program’s terms and conditions, funding list, and application form.
  • Extensive knowledge of irrigated crops grown in southern Alberta.
  • Knowledge of legal land locations systems such as Alberta Township Survey (ATS) or Prairie Farm Location (PFL).

Term of Employment: Temporary full-time position ending Sept 30, 2025, with a possibility of extension.
