The Environment Agency offers a fantastic opportunity to be part of a team that makes a real difference in creating a better place for people and wildlife. We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and highly motivated chartered engineer to provide senior technical leadership. You will work closely with the Operations leadership team, offering advice and guidance, motivating and inspiring others, and demonstrating excellent communication skills.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Mentoring and building our professional engineering capability.
  • Civil Engineering assurance for our investment decisions.
  • Providing Civil Engineering assurance across our key assets, including reservoirs.
  • Taking a lead in the shift to a whole-life asset management approach, ensuring timely cost-effective sustainable interventions.
  • Senior User role on critical asset refurbishment projects.
  • Developing and managing a programme of asset inspections.
  • Assuring the risk management of below required condition EA & third-party assets
  • Civil Engineering advice in preparation for and during incidents, particularly the development of Temporary Defence Deployment Plans.
  • Specialist health and safety assurance.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key internal and external partners to influence their activities and promote and enhance the EA’s goals and reputation.
  • Working closely with Asset Performance, Field Operation, Mechanical/Electrical, Flood and Coastal Risk Management, Incident Management teams, as well as our external delivery partners, both locally and nationally.
  • Supporting the management and delivery of correspondence relating to flood risk assets.

The team

You would be a key part of the Area Operations leadership team, responsible for managing, maintaining, and operating our flood assets which reduce flood risk to communities and enhancing the environment. This role sits in the Operations and Waterways department, in the Thames area. The team works across the whole of the Thames so your time would be split across the whole area. Travel to sites/offices is required. A full driving licence is essential.

Experience/skills required

We are seeking a highly skilled, experienced, and motivated senior technical leader with a passion and commitment for engineering, people and the environment.

You will be:

  • Able to solve problems innovatively, offer sustainable engineering solutions, and make sound decisions. Strong communication is key to leading a diverse team.
  • Able to balance flood risk and environmental priorities, bringing industry knowledge.
  • Experienced in managing health, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Passionate about people development, creating an inclusive environment, and contributing to sustainability goals.
  • Confident in building relationships with suppliers, external partners, and internal teams, with a collaborative mindset and dedication to professional growth.
  • Educated to degree level in engineering or have comparable technical expertise.
  • Must be a chartered civil engineer (CEng MICE or CEng MCIWEM) or an incorporated engineer progressing to chartered status within 12 months of appointment.

The role also attracts a £6,000 market forces factor for a Chartered Civil Engineer. If the candidate who is successful is part of IEng they will get £3K Market Forces Factor initially which will increase to £6K once chartered.

The base location for the role is flexible and has some at home working but there is an expectation that the person will work attend all offices as the business needs and attend site visits and potentially trips into London/country wide for network meetings.

Role specific license requirements: Driving License

If you are applying from the Civil Service please note that the Environment Agency is not a part of HM Civil Service and you would not be a Crown Servant in the event of being appointed. Therefore, you will not be eligible for continuous service.
