Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of the Basin Water Management Section & Irrigation Secretariat, this position manages and provides leadership and coaching to a team of professional and technical staff as they support district-scale irrigation water management in Alberta. This position supports the goals of the Irrigation Strategy and identifies and addresses challenges related to water supply and irrigation demand and their impact on Alberta’s agriculture industry.

As Manager, you lead and implement innovative water management, irrigation development, and monitoring programs that support the development of policies and facilitate growth of the irrigation and agri-processing industry.  This position also supports provincial government policy development related to irrigation water and land resource management, e.g., Water for Life Strategy, Irrigation Strategy and Land Use Framework. This position leads provincial-scale initiatives, working with government, irrigation districts, and irrigation sector representatives in support of increased conservation, efficiency and productivity of Alberta’s limited water resource. This role requires strong leadership and communication skills as well as the ability to build strong relationships with senior leaders in providing advice and direction while building and managing efficient processes and timelines. This position requires a good understanding of the relevant legislation, policy initiatives, strategic priorities, and financial and human resource policies.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting sustainable irrigation development by assessing and managing risks and opportunities through irrigation modeling analysis
  • Supporting the delivery of the cost-shared grant funding to improve efficiency and sustainability of water conveyance and delivery systems
  • Collaborate with the irrigation sector on water management initiatives
  • Supporting policy and strategic recommendations through collaboration with the irrigation sector for collecting and reporting information on the sector’s state and development
  • Maintaining a safe and positive work environment, encouraging learning and recognizing the contributions of all Section employees

Qualifications

A university degree in Agriculture, Engineering, or related Science, supplemented by four years of work experience with demonstrated expertise in agricultural land and water management.

Related 8 years of combined experience and/or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Demonstrated experience in building partnership development skills and leading staff development is required.

Experience in irrigated agricultural production systems in Alberta and irrigation sector policy initiatives is an asset.

This position works Monday to Friday 8:15am to 4:30pm and is based out of Lethbridge.
