Job description

As the world grapples with the climate crisis, species loss, weather extremes and challenges to water quality and supply, our work is more critical than ever. There has never been a more interesting and important time to be an Environment Agency Deputy Director within our Flood Risk Directorate.

We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, strong leader to join our Deputy Director cadre and lead our Environmental Assessment & Reservoir Regulation Team of c150 staff. The team has a very broad reach and influence across the Environment Agency and the wider industry. Reporting to the Director of Innovation, Systems & Services you will be part of a supportive leadership team comprising five other Deputy Directors.

This pivotal position is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight to ensure that our national environmental assessments, reservoir safety, and regulatory frameworks are effectively implemented. The role ensures compliance with relevant legislation, supports sustainable environmental outcomes, and safeguards public safety through the management and regulation of reservoirs.

You will bring strategic thinking, excellent communication, relationship building, service development and change management. Working with leaders across the organisation, government and a range of external stakeholders, you’ll present evidence to decision makers in a compelling way, including to our Executive Directors Team and Board.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

The team

You’ll be working within the Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) Directorate reporting to our Director of Innovation, Systems and Services (ISS), which is a newly formed function.

The Environmental Assessment & Reservoir Regulation Team is a nearly formed business unit of circa 150 staff. The team relies on strong networking and influencing skills, working with others internally and externally. You will be supported by a Personal Assistant and will have approximately five direct reports.

Experience/skills required

You’ll be a strategic thinker, able to show that you have the professional skills, technical knowledge, breadth of experience and personal qualities for this post, as well as the leadership skills to succeed at Deputy Director level

You’ll have expertise in influencing senior leaders and colleagues in a range of situations.

You’ll have experience in leading large, multi-disciplinary teams and supporting teams through change

You’ll have experience of communicating and engaging effectively within a large, complex organisation

You’ll have a track record of success in managing large complex projects, programmes and/or portfolios of work along with setting up new governance structures

You’ll demonstrate the effective management of large and/or constrained budgets.

You’ll have a strong understanding of the business of the Environment Agency and relevant UK legislation, regulation and policy

You’ll demonstrate understanding of the importance of a diverse workforce.
