About the Organization

The Battle River Watershed Alliance (BRWA) is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with a diverse group of stakeholders to promote the health and sustainable management of land and water in the Battle River and Sounding Creek watersheds using the best science and social science available.

Under Water for Life: Alberta’s Strategy for Sustainability, the BRWA is a designated Watershed Planning and Advisory Council (WPAC) for the Battle River and Sounding Creek watersheds in Alberta. Our role is to report on the state of the watershed, lead in watershed planning, and to convene and collaborate with stakeholders to foster stewardship and to increase awareness of best practices through education and outreach. We are dedicated to preserving and enhancing the land, water and biodiversity in these basins.

The Environmental Program Coordinator is part of the Battle River Watershed Alliance (BRWA) team dedicated to enhancing stewardship and watershed literacy in communities in the Battle River and Sounding Creek watersheds. Reporting to the Education Lead, the Environmental Program Coordinator is responsible for contributing to the BRWA education, communications, and outreach programs, including community events.

The Environmental Program Coordinator will work with the education team to:

1. Assist in delivering school and summer education programs and presentations including:

● Caring for our Watersheds Program

● X-Stream Science Field Trips

● Waste in our Watershed Tours

● Science Camp, hosted in partnership with University of Alberta, Augustana Campus

2. Assist with the content for communications documents such as:

● Quarterly member newsletter

● Watershed factsheets, information guides, educational resource documents

● Website

● Social media

3. Assist with planning and running special events such as:

● Watershed Festival

● Program development and launch of a habitat tour

● Stewardship workshops

4. Other responsibilities:

● Lead community science initiatives such as habitat monitoring and BRWA caretaking responsibilities for protected areas

● Help to develop and pilot a habitat tour in Big Knife Provincial Park

● Support riparian restoration initiatives, including coordinating community weed pull events

● Organize community volunteers and partnerships with local businesses as needed

(Activities may include webinars and outdoor activities as appropriate based on current public health measures.)

The position involves day travel to schools and outdoor sites within the Battle River and Sounding Creek watersheds. The Environmental Program Coordinator will be based in the BRWA Office in Camrose, Alberta and will be expected to work with educators, students, and other members of the community in both classroom and outdoor education settings.

Education/Certification/Experience

Enrolled in and completed (or completing), at a minimum, the second year of a post secondary degree or diploma in Environmental Sciences, Biology, Education or a related field.

Required Skills

● Some knowledge of water, lake and aquatic ecosystems

● Positive attitude, self-starter, highly motivated

● Experience with online-based presentation tools (e.g. developing and posting videos)

● Strong writer

● Excellent interpersonal skills

● Comfortable talking to general public and students (grades 4-12)

● Good verbal communication skills and active listening skills

● Effective time-management skills

● The ability to set and work to meet weekly goals towards fulfilling their goals

● Flexible, detail-oriented, capable of multi-tasking with several competing demands

● Functions effectively in a team setting and independently

● Ability to learn quickly

● Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

● Willing to travel as needed

Assets

● Event coordination experience

● Social media administrator

● Graphic design experience

● Have current Standard First Aid & CPR

Other Requirements

● Have a valid Class 5 driver’s license

● Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and an occasional evening

● Willing to provide a Police and Vulnerable Sector Check

● Youth eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs Program including:

● Youth between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of the employment

● A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,

● Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

The BRWA will provide you with:

1. Cloud-based team shared folder. File storage to be governed, with written agreement, by the BRWA information and privacy policy

2. Workers Compensation Board coverage

3. Training and coaching from staff and subject matter experts

4. Health and safety workplace training, including standard operating procedures. Implement and document relevant public health measures.

Language Skills

Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills in English
