Introduction/Job Purpose:

The Water Resources Hydrologist I provide reliable information to decision-makers in the state regarding surface-water availability. To support water resource investigations that help the state better understand the state’s water resources. To assist in the development of surface water information and products (reports, databases, and technical papers) that satisfy legislatively defined duties of the Department of Environmental Services. To assist River Basin Councils in the implementation of River Basin Plans. 

Job Duties: 

1. Participates in new and ongoing surface water projects in the State as needed. Provides entry level technical assistance to Hydrology Section staff. Works with stakeholder groups as needed to complete projects. Projects include: 

   a. hydrologic analyses to characterize surface water resources and surface water availability. 

   b. analyses of water use data. 

   c. the Federal Energy Relicensing Commission’s (FERC) relicensing of hydro-electric plants. 

   d. ecological or instream flow studies.

   e. assisting other staff in drought assessments.

   f.   assisting other staff in field work and collection of hydrologic data.

2. Provides entry level Technical Support and assists River Basin Councils in fulfilling goals and recommendations outlined in River Basin Plans. Specifically, 

   a. Participates in hydrologic investigations as needed to support River Basin Plan implementation. 

   b. Assists Councils in public outreach activities. 

   c. Assists Councils in acquiring funding needed for plan implementation.

3. Participates in surface-water modeling applications in the State’s major river basins to support regional water planning efforts and other water investigations. Specific surface-water model primary utilized is the Simplified Water Allocation Model (SWAM), but other surface-water models may be utilized as needed.  Specifically: 

   a. Prepares model input data, runs model scenarios and interprets and summarizes model outputs. 

   b. Prepares summary reports for Hydrology Section Manager.

   c. Participates in model updates and/or enhancements. 

   d. Reviews model updates or enhancements completed by outside contractors and provides appropriate feedback. 

   e. Becomes knowledgeable on additional surface-water models as needed that may be used for planning purposes or in other surface-water resource investigations.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in hydrology, geology or geological engineering. 

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
