What You Will Be Doing: This permanent, full-time position with the Water Quality team at the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) primarily focuses on the relationship between environmental science and its application in the management of natural resources. You will need to maintain a current understanding of water quality research and public administration and policy, and use that knowledge to draft state regulations and assist with their implementation. This will involve working with large datasets, complex regulations, and various state and federal agencies.
Mission and Values/Culture:
The Division of Water, Water Quality group is a unique program within the Department of Environmental Conservation. We work to improve and protect Alaska’s waters in many ways, including developing water quality regulations, addressing nonpoint source pollution, assessing surface water quality, assisting with quality assurance, and reviewing onsite wastewater systems. We are a small, tight knit group of scientists and engineers who are passionate about what we do. The Water Quality Standards coordinator works to meet DEC’s mission by drafting regulations that are used as the basis for permitting decisions, protection of human health and the environment, and regulatory compliance.
Benefits of Joining Our Team: Whether you’re looking to apply a love of challenging questions and issues, public planning, or environmental science this position will offer you an excellent opportunity. The work of the WQS Coordinator spans many diverse fields such as law, statistical analysis, data science, hydrology, aquatic ecology, chemistry, and public engagement; knowledge of analytical and software tools such as R and GIS would be an asset to this position. A flexible work schedule, telework options, and formal and informal training opportunities are provided.
The Working Environment You Can Expect: Your primary workstation may be located in any of the DEC offices statewide (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Soldotna, Wasilla). While most of your work will be in an office setting, there is occasional travel to participate in field work and site inspections to remote Alaskan locations. Example work assignments include conducting independent research, drafting of summary findings for DEC leadership, and engaging with the general public on issues associated with water quality.
