Student, Technical Science (Water) – Hybrid

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join its talented team of professionals in the Technical Science and External Innovation branch. We are looking for an individual with a passion for Alberta’s water resources. As a Student, Technical Science (Water), you will work with the Technical Science team to audit surface and groundwater usage by the energy industry. The team consists of subject matter experts in air, hydrology, hydrogeology, noise, civil engineering, measurement, and technical learning. In this role, you will have the opportunity to learn from this diverse group of professionals, as well as other water specialists at the AER. Your primary responsibility will be auditing water usage for energy projects licensed under the Water Resources Act and the Water Act. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain both technical and regulatory experience, engaging with science, legislation, policy, and Alberta’s regulatory framework. You will collaborate with experienced water scientists, interact with other technical professionals, communicate with industry stakeholders, and analyze water usage data.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Extract water use data from various systems.
- Assess for missing information and report findings.
- Review water license environmental conditions and compare them against hydrometric or measured flow data.
- Request data from industry and liaise with AER hydrologists and water engineers.
- Assist with other initiatives or projects as required throughout the work term.
- Document findings and write reports.
- Participate in AER summer student networking events and activities.
- Deliver end-of-term presentations.
What we’re looking for in you:
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or diploma program in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
- Experience with GIS mapping applications is an asset.
- Proficiency in data management using Microsoft Excel is preferred.
- Have a strong interest in environmental science, hydrology, and/or water resource management.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to work independently and take initiative to achieve objectives.
- Strong analytical, organizational, paired with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with an emphasis on technical writing.
Additional Information:
- Proof of enrollment in a registered institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
