Water Education for Latino Leaders (WELL)

Los Angeles, CA, USA 🇺🇸

Full job description

About WELL

Water Education for Latino Leaders (WELL), established in 2012, is on a mission to educate and train local Latino elected officials about water issues in order to promote timely and equitable policies and actions that support a robust economy, healthy communities, and a resilient environment for all Californians. WELL hosts annual conferences, regional workshops, and fellowship programs to educate elected leaders about California’s most pressing water issues and has trained over 1,600 local elected officials.

Why are we hiring?

WELL wants to transform the water sector by addressing the critical need for diversity and representation. California’s Latino community represents nearly 40% of the state’s population, yet they hold only 5% of the leadership roles in water policy and governance. This disparity extends across the entire industry, where 75% of urban water district directors are male and 81% are White, and women make up only 14% of the workforce in water and wastewater sectors. These statistics paint a stark picture of an industry that fails to reflect the diversity of the communities it serves.

We need to change this – not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s essential for the future. California’s population is rapidly changing, and the water sector must evolve to meet these shifts. As we face the approaching “silver tsunami” and witness a growing presence of women and BIPOC in the workforce, we cannot afford to leave these communities underrepresented. The challenges we face are complex, and the solutions will only be effective when they are shaped by diverse perspectives and experiences. Together, we can lead this transformation and ensure that the water industry reflects the rich diversity of the people they serve.
