Description of Work | The mission of the Water Sciences Laboratory is to provide technology, expertise, services, and training in advanced analytical science supporting today’s water and natural resources students, researchers, and stakeholders. The Lab is part of the Nebraska Water Center and the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska. As the Water Sciences Laboratory Research Manager, you will: Enhance visibility and streamline the research and training missions of the Nebraska Water Center (NWC) and Water Sciences Laboratory (WSL). Direct laboratory operations, covering data management, quality assurance, equipment upkeep, and regulatory compliance. Supervise sample processing, client relations, and ensure precise reporting and documentation via the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Coordinate equipment use, lead staff and student training programs, manage internships, workshops, and digital badging, while contributing to teaching and promoting lab capabilities. Collaborate with the Laboratory Director and Business Center on budgeting, pricing, and client management. Direct promotional activities including presenting information at workshops and conferences and ensuring digital and print resources are updated and maintained. This position is located on UNL’s East Campus in Lincoln, NE. In the UNL System, this position is categorized as a Research Lab Manager I. Minimum Required Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in water science, chemistry, biology, microbiology, engineering, or related field plus four years of hands-on experience in analytical laboratory operations; OR Master’s degree in related field plus two years of hands-on experience in analytical laboratory operations. Working knowledge of environmental analytical methods, proper laboratory techniques and procedures, and laboratory regulations and safety. Proficiency in tools such as Microsoft Office for spreadsheets, email, and collaboration. Project management or supervisory experience. Demonstrated ability to train others. |
Preferred Qualifications | The following qualifications are preferred but not required: Chemical safety, chemical waste management, and radiation safety training. Working knowledge of budget management and cost accounting. Experience with document or database management. |
