Water Resources Engineering Assistant
Newmarket, Ontario
9-month Contract
Hourly Wage Range: $30.45 to $38.06 (2024 rate)
The Water Resources Assistant position will report to the Director, Engineering and will support the Water Resources Engineer – Flood Management (the Engineer) and the Engineering team members.

- Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and SharePoint) and proficient in hydrologic/hydraulic models.
What you will do
- Support the Engineer by providing information to consultants, municipal partners, and Conservation Authority staff on floodplain elevations specific to permit applications.
- Analyze consultant issues in models and provide feedback to the Engineer.
- Support the Engineer in locating and preparing hydrologic and hydraulic reports and other information to support of engineering data requested.
- Modify and execute hydraulic models to assess potential impacts associated with development applications
- Serve as a Flood Duty Officer, on a rotational basis with other engineering staff.
- Maintain the Flood Contingency Plan contacts and support the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program at the Conservation Authority.
- In conjunction with GIS staff, support the Engineer in ensuring the revision of regulatory floodplain mapping, information tracking systems, documentation, databases and other engineering managed hazard mapping data as applicable.
- Support in developing new hydrologic and hydraulic models to support implementation of floodplain mapping system at the Conservation Authority.
- Assist with the preparation of requests for proposals for floodplain mapping updates.
- Conduct submission reviews under the Lake Simcoe Phosphorus Offsetting Policy.
- Use validated flow, rain gauge, and site observations to calibrate models.
- Identify base line watershed conditions leading to significant flooding in flood prone areas.
- Collect, organize, and track survey data, site measurements, observations, and reports on historical flood events within the Conservation Authority watershed.
- Work with monitoring staff to analyze water levels at key gauges and their relationship to forecast and notify of local flooding during a flood event.
- Develop and maintain graphs showing overbank flooding levels at flow gauges.
