SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
Reporting to the Manager, River System Science, the Senior Specialist, Fluvial Geomorphology will work on a diverse range of projects across the organization relating to geomorphic processes in rural and urban environments. They will be involved in long term, catchment and subwatershed scale projects that further our understanding of the watershed and direct management actions. These projects ensure that CVC maintains leading edge knowledge to enable science-based decision making and long-term sustainable actions. They will act as a key internal resource for erosion hazard management. This position provides technical support to ensure the effective and efficient development and delivery of CVC’s programs, policies and services relating to, fluvial geomorphology and erosion and infrastructure hazard management. The position is also responsible for research and analysis, fieldwork, preliminary level design, report preparation and fluvial geomorphology guideline revisions. This role may include geomorphic monitoring and construction oversight.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in geography, environmental science, water resource engineering, geology or related discipline is mandatory
- Master’s degree in science or engineering with a focus on geomorphology, sediment transport and / or river restoration is considered an asset
- A minimum of 5 years of work experience in applied fluvial geomorphology
- Understanding of stream power approaches
- Practical experience in completing geomorphology fieldwork
- Strong computer skills in word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), and database management (Access)
- Strong analytical and organizational skills to plan and organize tasks
- Strong written and oral communication skills to convey technical data in reports, guidance documents and oral presentations
- Air photo interpretation skills
- Must possess valid G driver’s license
- Registered as a G.I.T./ E.I.T., P.Geo or P. Eng is considered an asset
SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS
- Undertake catchment and subwatershed scale technical geomorphology studies that support the understanding and management of our watershed. These include highly specialized tasks such as sediment budgets, hazard management and modelling (e.g., stream power modelling) projects.
- Complete site level projects that deliver on the ground results such as dam removal, watercourse restoration or erosion management.
- Develop and enhance the understanding of watershed restoration techniques within the CVC jurisdiction (at the catchment scale, reach scale and site scale).
- Provide technical leadership for infrastructure erosion risk projects to support municipal partner asset management programming.
- Coordinate and conduct geomorphic monitoring including installation, verification and maintenance of stream monitoring sites. Required to work in the field including off hours and inclement weather conditions.
- Undertake stream assessments (i.e. conduct geomorphic fieldwork to input to channel designs, inventory geomorphic processes, etc.).
- Support the development of Authority objectives, policies, procedures, guidelines, and programs for fluvial geomorphology, stormwater management and watershed restoration.
- Develop and enhance the understanding of watershed restoration techniques within the CVC jurisdiction (at the catchment scale, reach scale and site scale).
- Review and provide quality assurance and quality control of stream assessment data. Work with numerous forms of spatial data, including digital topographic data and aerial imagery. Process and analyze data.
- Conduct geomorphic data management and support the development and maintenance of geomorphic databases.
- Provide technical support to plan review engineering services – review Planning Act, Conservation Authority Act and other development related applications from a geomorphology and erosion hazard management perspective.
- Review and provide comments on planning and development related applications, municipal and internal initiatives, as well as comprehensive environmental and technical studies from a geomorphology and erosion hazard management perspective – ensuring coordination with the engineering team.
- Undertake project management, including project design, work plan development, budget preparation, and cost-accounting.
- Manage consultants including the preparation of terms of reference, scheduling, coordinating tasks, budgets, communications and invoicing.
