Reporting to the Principal Engineer, Dam Safety, the Engineer is responsible for undertaking engineering investigations of referable dams. Assessing technical documentation submitted by dam owners. Participating in technical reviews and undertaking hydrological and hydraulic consequence assessments for small dams.
The role also provides opportunities to lead or participate in technical investigations, field work and site visits and contribute to industry best practice guidelines. The role can be based in Brisbane or from a regional location to facilitate an adaptive and agile workforce.

The Role
Join the largest engineering team in the Department and make a difference towards the safety and well-being of Queensland’s communities. Our dam safety team plays a pivotal role in regulating and overseeing water dams across the State, ensuring that dam owners adhere to dam safety standards in our published guidelines.
Key Accountabilities:
• Provide high-level technical reviews of dam safety documentation including detailed evaluations of failure impact assessments, emergency action plans, safety reviews, and inspection reports, making compliance recommendations aligned with the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008 and industry standards.
• Conduct site-based audits of referable dams identifying safety issues and evaluate compliance with legislative requirements.
• Advise and collaborate with dam owners, stakeholders, and departmental staff offering guidance on departmental legislation, policies, and guidelines for referable dam regulation, ensuring all parties understand their responsibilities.
• Inspect water supply dams in response to safety concerns acting as an authorised officer under the Act, conducting inspections and providing recommendations on observed inquiries.
• Perform internal hydrological and hydraulic consequence assessments using the “Guideline for Failure Impact Assessment of Water Dams” methodology to assess small dams and advise on regulatory requirements as needed.
• Assist in emergency response and provide technical advice during flood events and dam safety emergencies.
• Prepare reports, briefs, and correspondence including dam safety conditions and referable dam notices, ensuring compliance with standards.
• Contribute to dam safety policy and standards to strengthen dam safety across Queensland.
• Mentor staff and students on dam safety and consequence assessment principles, building expertise within the team.
About You
• Have several years of post-graduate experience in planning, design and construction of water supply infrastructure projects and associated technical aspects (including hydrology and flood hydraulics).
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (mandatory).
• Limited travel away from the centre may be required.
• A class ‘C’ driver’s license is required.
• Registration as an RPEQ is desirable but not essential.
