Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Directly related experience. Basic knowledge of pollution related issues on Long Island. Experience in the development and delivery of science-related outreach and communications for a non-science audience and / or the general public. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with a variety of media platforms including web, social, print, and / or radio / TV. Experience with WordPress or other web content management.

Preferred Qualifications: 
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in environmental science, environmental policy, administration, communication, science communication, biology, ecology, marine sciences, oceanography, environmental management, environmental education and / or outreach, or related discipline. Familiarity with the PEP goals and actions as outlined in the 2020 Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan (CCMP). Ability to analyze web and email marketing metrics.

Brief Description of Duties: 
The Peconic Estuary Partnership (PEP) Water Quality Outreach Specialist will work under the direction of the Executive Director and report directly to the Outreach and Communications Manager.  This position will assist in the development and execution of community outreach as it relates to water quality, specifically with a focus on reducing nutrient pollution and stormwater related pollution to the Peconic watershed. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, and the ability to cultivate strategic relationships with a broad range of media contacts on a local, state, and regional level, including media in and of historically marginalized communities. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to present educational materials to general audiences. This position is also highly administrative in nature and will be responsible for record keeping, purchasing, scheduling and coordinating meetings, and other tasks as needed.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Outreach:
    • Identify key communities in high pollution areas and work with the Outreach and Communication Manager to develop and implement a targeted strategy for nutrient pollution reduction in the communities.
    • Organize and attend community events, workshops, and meetings to promote initiatives. Manage meeting logistics and procure necessary resources.
    • Build and maintain relationships with community leaders, stakeholders, and local groups.
    • Correspond with Homeowner Rewards Program Applicants; approve projects, and submit requisitions for reimbursement. Oversee records management and develop analytical reports.
    • Evaluate effectiveness of outreach programs and materials, making adjustments as needed to improve outreach efforts.
  • Communication:
    • Work with the PEP Outreach Team to develop content for newsletters, fact sheets, and other publications. Design and create materials for community science communication about nutrient and stormwater pollution.
    • Create a robust online presence; assist with PEP social media pages that support its mission.
    • Manage the PEP website in consultation with Director and Outreach and Communications Manager; coordinate posts, page updates, and photo additions. Work with the PEP team to identify content, timing and platform for social media posts.
    • Analyze and report on social outreach for PEP Committees, EPA, internal and team evaluation;
    • Support email outreach for PEP news and events; monitor and respond to engagement on social media platforms.
    • Assist in the development of educational signage and other educational materials for PEP projects and PEP partner projects where appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
