MDB’s Water Portfolio
MDB is committed to strengthening efforts that protect watersheds, preserve water resources, and improve water quality. We lead collaborative efforts to protect human and ecosystem health, support community-led initiatives, and develop local economies around sound water management. MDB staff has a wealth of experience in providing water-related services, including technical assistance, performance metrics development, economic and policy analysis, strategic communication and facilitation, and stakeholder outreach.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Water Sector Community Engagement Specialist to support MDB’s water portfolio with a federal government client. Candiates are reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis. The candidate will be hired on a contingent basis, dependent upon receipt of a contract award. Work can be performed from a remote location and candidate must be able to travel.
This is a contract only position, minimum of 1 year guarantee, and potentially 2-3 years. Travel will be required.
The Water Sector Community Engagement Specialist will be responsible for completing community assessments, traveling for site visits, collecting data, conducting research, and authoring water communication materials in a style and format appropriate for diverse target audiences. The Water Sector Community Engagement Specialist will also perform project management duties, engage directly with communities, and work directly with external clients and stakeholders. Candidate will receive training through project modules. The candidate may support water programs related wastetwater treatment, emerging containmants, and drinking water sources.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Working in a team environment to plan and execute all phases of projects
- Supporting the execution of community assessments and performing data collection. Travel may be required to conduct assessments in the field
- Supporting the development of environmental communication and evaluation materials
- Developing reports, fact sheets, and other outreach materials
- Interacting with MDB and other contractor staff to ensure project goals are achieved according to client expectations and all materials are delivered with expert-level readability, consistency, and technical accuracy
- Representing MDB to external clients and stakeholder groups
- Managing project work across tasks to meet near-term and long-term deadlines

Position Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s degree strongly preferred, preferably in water, environmental sciences, or public health
- 3-5 years of relevant experience in environmental science or public health, preferably with a focus on water or wastewater
- Strong project management and community engagement skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to collect data in usable formats, and develop and author communication materials
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work productively and diplomatically with a wide array of different people and federal and non-federal entities
- Field or community engagement experience and interactions with the public on behalf of a government entity
- Strong analytical, project management, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office in particular, Microsoft Word and Excel
